What is a 5G NR engineer?

5G NR (New Radio) Engineers are telecommunications professionals who specialize in the design, deployment, optimization, and maintenance of 5G wireless networks based on the 5G NR standard. Their work involves configuring network hardware and software, troubleshooting issues, testing network performance, and ensuring seamless connectivity for end-users. These engineers play a critical role in implementing next-generation mobile networks that support faster data speeds, lower latency, and advanced applications such as IoT and autonomous vehicles.

What are some typical challenges faced by a 5G NR engineer when optimizing network performance?

5G NR Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing network interference, ensuring seamless handovers between cells, and adapting to rapidly changing traffic patterns. They must analyze real-time data to optimize parameters for coverage, capacity, and latency, while also troubleshooting issues that arise from new hardware or software deployments. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including RF engineers, software developers, and field technicians—is crucial to address these complex challenges and maintain high-quality network performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 5G NR engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 5G NR Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications, radio frequency (RF) engineering, and cellular network protocols, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, network simulators, and 5G protocol testing equipment, along with relevant certifications like CCNA or 5G-specific credentials, is highly valuable. Strong analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you excel in cross-functional teams and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. These combined skills are essential for designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting advanced 5G networks to ensure high performance and reliability.

What is the difference between 5G Nr Engineer vs Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer?

Aspect5G Nr EngineerRadio Frequency (RF) Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunications, certifications like CCNA, RF certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, RF certifications, similar technical credentials
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and optimizing 5G NR networks, often in labs or field sitesDesigning and testing RF systems, working in labs, field testing, or manufacturing
Industry UsageTelecommunications, network providers, equipment manufacturersTelecommunications, wireless device manufacturing, network providers

While both roles involve working with wireless communication systems, a 5G Nr Engineer specializes in the design and deployment of 5G New Radio networks, focusing on 5G-specific technologies. An RF Engineer has a broader focus on radio frequency systems, including various wireless standards. The roles overlap in skills and industry but differ in their specific technical focus and project scope.

Are 5G Nr engineers in demand?

5G NR engineers are in high demand due to the global rollout of 5G networks, requiring expertise in radio access networks, signal processing, and telecommunications standards. The role often involves working with advanced tools and certifications, and job opportunities are growing across telecom companies and technology providers.

How to become a 5G NR engineer?

To become a 5G NR engineer, individuals typically need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, telecommunications, or a related field. Gaining experience with wireless communication systems, understanding 3GPP standards, and obtaining certifications such as Nokia Bell Labs or Ericsson 5G courses can enhance prospects. Proficiency in RF design, network planning, and familiarity with tools like MATLAB or network simulators are also valuable.

What is the salary of a 5G NR engineer?

The salary of a 5G NR engineer typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills can earn higher salaries in the telecommunications industry.

Job description

Day-to-Day Responsibilities Cellular Test Engineer (5G NR / LTE)

Test execution & validation

  • Execute conformance, functional, and regression test campaigns on 5G NR (SA/NSA) and LTE devices, covering RRC/NAS signaling, mobility, carrier aggregation, and data-throughput scenarios.
  • Validate radio protocol behavior against 3GPP specs and log findings with clear reproduction steps.
  • Run RF performance measurements (TX power, sensitivity, EVM, spurious emissions, throughput vs. signal level) and compare results against product requirements.

Automation on CMX/CMW

  • Build, maintain, and extend automated test scripts and suites on Rohde & Schwarz CMX500/CMW callbox platforms.
  • Own the nightly/weekly automated regression pipeline: monitor runs, triage failures, and keep the suite green as firmware drops land.
  • Develop Python tooling for test sequencing, instrument control, result parsing, and reporting; reduce manual test time through incremental automation.

Lab bench & hardware debug

  • Set up and operate lab benches: callboxes, spectrum/signal analyzers, power supplies, attenuators, shield boxes, and RF cabling.
  • Use an oscilloscope for signal integrity, timing, and power-sequencing debug on device hardware; isolate whether an issue is RF, protocol, or hardware in origin.
  • Maintain bench calibration, cable loss characterization, and equipment health; keep test setups documented and reproducible.

Debug & cross-functional work

  • Analyze protocol logs (QXDM/QCAT, modem traces, callbox logs) to root-cause failures and narrow them to a specific layer or component.
  • Partner with firmware, RF, and hardware engineers to reproduce issues, verify fixes, and confirm no regressions.
  • File, track, and drive defects to closure; escalate blockers affecting release milestones.

Reporting & continuous improvement

  • Produce daily/weekly test status summaries: pass rates, new failures, coverage gaps, and blocking issues.
  • Contribute to test plan development for new features, chipsets, and bands; expand coverage where automation or scenarios are thin.
  • Document test procedures, bench configurations, and known issues so results are repeatable across engineers and sites.

Must Have Skills

  • The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with cellular testing across both 5G NR and LTE technologies, including radio protocol validation, RF performance, and conformance/functional test execution.
  • They should be proficient with test automation on CMX (Rohde & Schwarz CMX500/CMW callbox platforms), building and maintaining automated test scripts and regression suites.
  • Strong lab bench skills are expected, including confident use of an oscilloscope and related instrumentation for signal integrity, timing, and hardware debug.
  • Familiarity with scripting (e.g., Python) for test automation, along with a solid grasp of cellular signaling and measurement fundamentals, will round out the profile.
  • Bachelor s degree in engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master s degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering.
  • Lab - engineer experience.
  • Former MAANG experience is best.
  • Engineering degree preferred.
