How much do 5 axis machining jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for 5 axis machining in the United States is $24.94, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $28.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paid machinist job?

The highest paid machinist roles are often specialized positions such as CNC programmer or master machinist, especially those working in aerospace, defense, or medical manufacturing. These roles typically require advanced skills, certifications, and experience with complex 5-axis machining equipment, and can command higher salaries compared to general machinist positions.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

In 5 Axis Machining, highly skilled CNC machinists or programmers with advanced certifications and extensive experience can earn around $2000 per day, especially for complex, high-precision work or overtime. Such roles often require expertise with CAD/CAM software, precision tools, and working in manufacturing environments with tight tolerances.

What can you make with a 5 axis mill?

A 5 axis machining operator can produce complex parts and components from various materials such as metals, plastics, and composites. These machines are capable of creating intricate geometries, including aerospace parts, medical devices, molds, and detailed prototypes, by allowing multi-directional tool movement for precise and efficient manufacturing.

What is the difference between 5 Axis Machining vs CNC Machinist?

Aspect5 Axis MachiningCNC Machinist
CredentialsTypically requires specialized training or certification in 5-axis programming and operationRequires CNC operator certification or technical training
Work EnvironmentMachine shops, manufacturing plants with complex partsFactories, machine shops, manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageHigh-precision aerospace, automotive, medical device manufacturingGeneral manufacturing, prototyping, small batch production

While both roles involve CNC technology, 5 Axis Machining focuses on programming and operating advanced multi-axis machines for complex parts, requiring specialized skills. CNC Machinists operate and set up CNC machines for various production tasks, often with broader application. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within manufacturing.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

Experienced CNC machinists specializing in 5-axis machining can potentially earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with advanced skills, certifications, and working in high-demand industries or locations. Salary depends on factors such as experience, certifications, complexity of work, and employer size.

As a CNC Programmer at RPI, your work directly impacts part quality, repeatability, and throughput in a technology-first, high-precision environment.

---

The Work You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Program 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC mills, along with live-tooling lathes, Swiss machines, and Wire EDM
  • Review CAD models, blueprints, and GD&T to develop efficient machining strategies
  • Select tooling, holders, feeds & speeds, and machining sequences for hard metals and engineered plastics
  • Match part requirements to the best machine platform (Matsuura, Okuma, Nakamura, Citizen, Robodrill, etc.)
  • Support machinists with setups, troubleshooting, and process optimization
  • Collaborate with programming, machining, and quality teams to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency
  • Assist with quoting, process planning, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Contribute to tooling strategies, fixture concepts, and machining best practices

This is a hands-on programming role with real shop-floor involvement—not a desk-only position.

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • 3–5 years of CNC programming experience in a precision machining environment
  • Experience programming hard materials (titanium, Inconel, stainless, tool steels, engineered plastics) on 3- or 4-axis mills
OR experience programming 5-axis mills (including aluminum-only environments)
  • Strong understanding of feeds & speeds, toolpath strategy, and GD&T
  • Ability to work closely with machinists and support shop-floor execution
  • Growth mindset and interest in advanced automation and modern CNC technology

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience programming Matsuura 5-axis machines
  • Strong proficiency with Mastercam or ESPRIT
