What is the difference between 5 Axis Cnc Machine vs CNC Machinist?

Aspect5 Axis Cnc MachineCNC Machinist
Primary RoleOperates and programs 5-axis CNC machines for complex part manufacturingSets up, operates, and maintains CNC machines, including programming and troubleshooting
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of CNC programming, CAD/CAM, and machine operationBlueprint reading, CNC programming, and machine operation skills
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities with advanced CNC equipmentFactories, machine shops, or manufacturing plants

While both roles involve working with CNC technology, a 5 Axis Cnc Machine refers to the equipment used for complex machining tasks, whereas a CNC Machinist is a professional who operates and programs these machines. The machinist may work with various CNC machines, including 5-axis models, but the machine itself is a tool, not a job title.

Is a 5 axis CNC machine hard to learn?

Learning to operate a 5 axis CNC machine as a machinist involves understanding complex programming, machine setup, and precision control, which can require dedicated training and practice. While it has a steeper learning curve than simpler CNC machines, many operators become proficient through technical courses, hands-on experience, and certification programs. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and machining principles can facilitate the learning process.

What can you make with a 5 Axis CNC Machine?

A 5 Axis CNC machine is used in manufacturing to produce complex and precise parts such as aerospace components, automotive parts, medical devices, molds, and intricate artistic pieces. Its ability to move in multiple axes allows for detailed and efficient machining of complex geometries, often requiring advanced programming and tooling. Skilled operators and CAD/CAM software are essential for maximizing its capabilities.

  • Develop and modify CNC programs for complex and custom-machined components
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications
  • Perform machine setup including tooling, fixtures, offsets, and calibration
  • Troubleshoot machining and programming issues to maintain production efficiency
  • Manufacture a variety of precision parts requiring unique setups and programs
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve machining processes
  • Maintain quality standards and ensure parts meet strict dimensional requirements
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of CNC machining experience with strong 5-axis machining capabilities
  • Proven experience independently programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines
  • Experience with CAM programming software; TEBIS experience highly preferred
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, feeds, speeds, and work holding
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and GD&T specifications
  • Experience producing precision components in aerospace, tooling, die cast, or similar industries
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Must be an experienced machinist/programmer capable of developing programs and running complex jobs independently
Compensation & Benefits
  • Pay: $30 - $40/hour
  • Competitive benefits package
  • People-first work environment
  • Stable and growing company with career advancement opportunities
