Job description

GroundskeeperHours: 80 Hours/MonthLocation: Beaumont Scout Reservation       6480 Beaumont Reservation Dr.      High Ridge, MO 63049

Council Website: www.stlbsa.org

Position Overview

Since 1911, Greater St. Louis Area Scouting has helped young people grow into responsible leaders through outdoor adventure, hands-on learning, and fun activities. Our goal is to help build strong individuals and a better community. The Groundskeeper works as part of a small on-site team that helps take care of Beaumont Scout Reservation. This role focuses on day-to-day upkeep of the campgrounds, helping visitors have a positive experience, and making sure the property is safe, clean, and welcoming. This position does not include a salary. Instead, the Groundskeeper is provided free on-site housing and utilities in exchange for 80 hours of work per month. This makes it a great opportunity for someone looking for a low-cost living arrangement while contributing to the care of a large outdoor property.

Responsibilities
  • Live on Camp Property: Free on-site housing is provided, and the Groundskeeper is required to live at the camp.
    • The house has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
    • If the caretaker has children living with them, those children may be eligible to attend the Rockwood School District or the Northwest School District.
    • Basic utilities including electricity, water, trash service, and Starlink internet are provided at no cost. Cable or satellite TV is not included, but the caretaker may subscribe to personal streaming services at their own expense if desired.
  • Customer Service: Welcome and assist all visitors, enforce camp rules, and represent our company in a friendly, professional way.
  • Maintenance and Safety: Help keep buildings, campsites, roads, and equipment safe, and in good working order. Always follow health and safety standards.
  • Inspection and Repairs: Perform regular inspections, handle routine maintenance and minor repairs, and coordinate larger repairs when needed.
  • Reservation System: Use an online reservation system to check who is using the camp, when they are on-site, and any special set-up needs they have.
  • Coordinate Volunteer Projects: Help prepare, promote, and support volunteer workdays and service projects that improve the camp.
  • Community Relations: Maintain good relationships with local officials, neighbors, and community groups.
  • Budget Awareness: Follow established budgets and purchasing procedures. Obtain bids when required and assist with basic bookkeeping or purchase requests.
  • Other Duties as Needed: Help with additional tasks that support the overall operation and care of the camp.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Must be able to register as a member of Scouting America.
  • Renters insurance is required, with a minimum of $500,000 in personal liability coverage, which typically costs approximately $25–$50 per month depending on the provider and coverage options.
  • Willing and able to obtain required certifications for camp operations, such as ServSafe Manager and other safety-related certifications. Training will be provided as needed.
  • Able to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Comfortable handling multiple tasks and projects.
  • Good problem-solving skills and flexibility when plans change.
  • Clear communication skills (in person, phone, and email).
  • Basic computer skills, including email, internet use, and common software (Windows and Microsoft Office).
  • Basic understanding of budgets and purchasing procedures.
  • Experience working with or motivating volunteers is helpful.
  • Experience in property maintenance is a plus.
Work Expectations
  • Work 80 hours per month, with some flexibility in scheduling.
  • Evening and weekend availability will be required based on camp activities.
  • Physical ability to perform light to moderate maintenance work and spend time outdoors in weather conditions.
Compensation and Benefits

This is an unpaid Groundskeeper role. There is no salary or hourly wage. Compensation is provided in the form of free on-site housing and utilities. Housing and utilities are provided in exchange for 80 hours of work per month. Because this is not a paid position, it does not include benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement plans.
