Job description

Braid Machine Operator 3rd Shift


Judd Wire Inc., a Sumitomo Electric Group company, is looking for 3rd shift Braid Machine Operator in our Turners Falls, MA facility.  Individuals will be responsible for a variety of duties including: Performing required operations connected with measuring, inspecting, testing and re-spooling wire and cable in preparation for shipping or its next operation. Targeted job training provided for all skill levels starting on day 1 and throughout your career at Judd Wire.

Hiring Range: $19.67-23.62/hour, $3.00/hour 3rd shift differential.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work from orders, special customer requirements, requisitions, verbal instructions as to type of wire gauge and number of ends, number of picks or crossovers per inch; footage required on order and footage delivered from previous operations; meet schedules, work in BPCS system. 
  • Maintain desired number of ends; mount bobbins on braider carriers leading to ends of braiding point.
  • Maintain good traverse during braiding operations; use micrometer to check wire gauges. Separate different gauges for use, return to stock. Follow SOP’s; change take up reels before being overfilled. Make minor adjustments to ensure smooth machine operation, motor speeds, tension on carrier stems.
  • Perform minor maintenance including oiling of machines. Cut loose ends of braid, separate bobbins, box for return to vendor and keep guards and shield over pulley gears and chain. Know raw material part and lot numbers as necessary.
  • Utilize computer system to determine raw materials inventory as required to complete orders. May contact other departments regarding raw materials. 
  • Detect and report defective materials, improper compounding, malfunctioning equipment, unusual conditions to supervision. Observe all safety rules and regulations. Maintain equipment and work areas in clean and orderly condition.   
  • Perform other similar or related duties as assigned or instructed by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of ordinary arithmetic including decimals, fractions, and simple use of specification together with use of adjustable measuring instruments.
  • Position requires moderate physical effort consisting of frequent moving, average weights, lifting up to 50 lbs., pushing, pulling etc.
  • Working conditions may expose employee to noise, fumes, dust, hot and cold temperatures etc.
