Job description

The HVAC Controls Design Engineer position serves to assist the Sales and Engineering Teams with estimating, engineering, and HVAC controls design on commercial HVAC projects. They work alongside the Sales Team, Design Engineers, and customers within the Design/Build construction process from concept design through construction design and further support the Project Management team through construction. The HVAC Controls Design Engineer may be called upon to represent Hunter-Davisson for bid presentations and weekly design meetings.

The HVAC Controls Engineer will report daily on a full-time basis to Hunter-Davisson, Inc. at:

This position is not approved for working remotely.

This role is expected to travel to customer sites of varying locations to include out of town when needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is required to work in an office setting.  Visits to job sites are required as needed throughout the project life cycle.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Generate Controls Points Lists.
  • Generate, review and assist with Sequence of Operations for mechanical systems.
  • Generate Control riser diagrams, floor plans with com-loop routing, and Control system schematics.
  • Review 3rd party and/or other team members Control Drawings and provide feedback.
  • Provide feedback to Sales team for scope of work and estimating.
  • Generate accurate estimates and proposals for Controls according to intended scope of work.
  • Proactively review project scope and identify required resources to achieve project goals.
  • Integrate the HVAC Control system design with the engineered mechanical design.
  • Perform control equipment selection.  Request and review submittals.
  • Assemble packages of plans, control submittals, points list, panel termination drawings and specifications for permit and construction.
  • Submit plans for permit with a variety of jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate scope of work with subcontractors.
  • Proactively transition projects from Engineering into Construction.
  • Review graphics prepared by Controls Design Integrator prior to construction completion.
  • Prepare commissioning documents, perform commissioning and develop commissioning reports at the completion of a project.
  • Available to assist the Service Department for technical support relative to controls.
  • Controls technical resource.
  • Work with Sales Team and Construction Operations Manager to review new ideas, problems, and concepts to increase department effectiveness.
  • Obtain quotes when requested by sales.
  • Maintain currency with Hunter-Davisson standards, HVAC systems and building codes.
  • Maintain all applicable licenses and accreditations.
  • Oversee, mentor, and work with less experienced Control Engineers and Design Engineers.  Assist in their overall development.
  • Provide technical support for Design Engineers.
  • Oversee and work with Drafters and Detailers.
  • Maintain the electronic project files on the Q-drive and initial population of the J-drive.
  • Develop standard Control details and standard construction details.
  • Attend design development meetings.
  • Provide field coordination and support as needed.
  • Perform site visits at various stages of a project.
  • Attend all company, office, and department meetings.
  • Proactively engage in all aspects of company safety program.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND PROFICIENCIES:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the Commercial HVAC industry.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience relevant to the HVAC Controls Engineer position. 
  • Professional Engineer License Preferred.
  • Honeywell Niagara N4 Certification required.
  • Ability to draft own design in AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Knowledgeable of and able to apply current building, mechanical and energy code.
  • Proficient in the use of computers.  Programs include: Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PDF writer such as Bluebeam and will become proficient in Vista Construction Management software.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills with internal and external customers.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, project management, and organizational skills.
