3D Technologists are professionals who specialize in creating, manipulating, and managing three-dimensional digital models using specialized software and technologies. They often work across industries such as architecture, engineering, entertainment, healthcare, and manufacturing, producing visualizations, prototypes, animations, or simulations. Their expertise includes 3D modeling, rendering, scanning, and printing, enabling them to bring concepts to life for design, analysis, or presentation purposes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D technologist?

To thrive as a 3D Technologist, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling, rendering, and design principles, typically supported by a degree in a related field such as computer graphics or engineering. Proficiency with industry-standard software like Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, or CAD tools and familiarity with 3D scanning and printing technologies are essential. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and deliver high-quality visualizations. These abilities are crucial for producing accurate, innovative, and functional 3D outputs that meet client or project needs.

  • Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years experience building 3D surfaces with Trimble Business Center, Carlson Civil, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation InRoads, or Terramodel
  • Experience with Trimble, Topcon, Leica machine control and construction layout equipment a strong plus
  • Knowledge of and ability to read construction plans
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
