How much do 3d scan jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for 3d scan in the United States is $78,472.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,500.00 and $98,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Scan Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Scan Specialist, you need strong knowledge of 3D scanning techniques, geometry, and familiarity with CAD software, often supported by a degree in engineering, design, or a related field. Expertise in operating 3D scanners (such as structured light or laser scanners), using point cloud processing software, and sometimes relevant certifications like Autodesk or FARO training are highly valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication enhance project outcomes and client satisfaction. These skills ensure accurate data capture, efficient workflows, and high-quality 3D models essential for industries like manufacturing, architecture, and entertainment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in 3D scan roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in 3D scan roles often encounter challenges such as capturing accurate data in complex or poorly lit environments, handling large data files, and ensuring compatibility across various software platforms. To address these, it's important to be proficient with different scanning technologies, maintain organized workflows for data management, and stay updated on the latest software tools for post-processing and integration. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and project managers is also key to ensuring that scan data meets the needs of the broader team.

What is a 3D scan?

A 3D scan is a process that uses specialized equipment to capture the shape and appearance of real-world objects or environments in three dimensions. The technology collects data about the surface geometry and sometimes color, producing a digital 3D model that can be used for design, analysis, manufacturing, or virtual reality. 3D scanning is commonly used in industries like manufacturing, healthcare, architecture, and entertainment. The resulting models can be edited, measured, and even 3D printed depending on the application.

What is the difference between 3D Scan vs 3D Modeler?

Aspect3D Scan3D Modeler
Required SkillsLaser scanning, CAD software, spatial awareness3D modeling, CAD, artistic skills
Work EnvironmentOn-site scanning, industrial or construction sitesDesign studios, digital environments
Industry UsageArchitecture, construction, manufacturingEntertainment, product design, architecture

While 3D Scan involves capturing real-world objects or environments using laser or photogrammetry technology, 3D Modeler focuses on creating digital models from scratch or modifying existing ones. Both roles require familiarity with CAD software, but 3D Scan emphasizes data collection and spatial accuracy, whereas 3D Modelers prioritize artistic and design skills.

Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The individual will support the reverse engineering of aircraft parts through design work and 3D scanning to develop FAA-compliant PMA designs that go on to be manufactured, certified, and installed on commercial aircraft worldwide. Each project involves research into how a part functions in its aircraft or engine system, dimensional analysis using 3D scanning and inspection equipment, design decisions grounded in measured data, and production-ready drawings per ASME Y14.5. Beyond their own design work, this individual serves as the engineering team's go-to resource for 3D scanning, point cloud processing, and manual inspection. Work is project-based and primarily autonomous, with collaboration from senior engineers, certification, quality, procurement, and manufacturing throughout.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research and investigate part function, failure modes and effects, and operating conditions to establish design requirements

Set up and operate 3D scanning equipment to capture full geometry point cloud data (Hexagon AS1)

Process point cloud and mesh data using scan-to-CAD software (PolyWorks, Geomagic Design X)

Develop 3D solid models and drawings using SolidWorks

Perform dimensional inspection and support external materials analysis

Evaluate dimensional and material data to drive design decisions based on measured results, manufacturing capabilities, and functional requirements

Perform tolerance analysis and document engineering justification for design features

Prepare and release production drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards

Support other design engineers with measurement planning, scan requests, and interpretation of dimensional results

QUALIFICATIONS

2-5 years of 3D scanning and metrology experience

Experience with 3D scanning hardware and point cloud processing (Geomagic, PolyWorks)

Hands-on experience with manual measurement tools (vision system, micrometers, height gages, pin/ring gages, gage blocks)

Experience in quality assurance and conformity processes preferred

CAD/3D modeling design experience; proficiency with SolidWorks preferred

Knowledge of mechanical drafting standards (ASME Y14.5); familiarity with GD&T preferred

Detail oriented, organized, and able to self-manage across multiple concurrent projects

Experience with aircraft components and systems preferred

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar engineering discipline

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary position commensurate with experience and skills.

Company provides paid sick and vacation leave accrued, health, dental, vision and insurance options including STD, LTD, 401(K) with matching contribution and immediate vesting, flexible working hours. Company is relatively young, and opportunities exists for an individual to grow with the company.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in a standard office environment.  Noise level is moderate in the work area.

Communicating well orally with customers, management and co-workers is crucial.

Regular use of phone, email with hearing and vision correctable within normal ranges.
