3D Radiologic Technologist information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Radiologic Technologist?
What is the difference between 3D Radiologic Technologist vs MRI Technologist?
| Aspect | 3D Radiologic Technologist | MRI Technologist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Certification in radiologic technology, possibly specialized in 3D imaging | Certification in radiologic technology, specialized in MRI procedures |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, imaging centers performing 3D imaging | Hospitals, imaging centers focusing on MRI scans |
| Industry Usage | Used in diagnostic imaging requiring 3D visualization | Used in magnetic resonance imaging for detailed soft tissue images |
The main difference between a 3D Radiologic Technologist and an MRI Technologist lies in their imaging techniques. While both roles require radiologic technology certification and work in similar healthcare settings, 3D Radiologic Technologists specialize in creating three-dimensional images using various radiologic methods, whereas MRI Technologists focus specifically on magnetic resonance imaging. Both are essential for accurate diagnosis, but their imaging modalities and technical expertise differ.
What are some common challenges a 3D Radiologic Technologist faces when collaborating with physicians and other healthcare staff?

The practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed by radiologic technologists responsible for the use of radio frequencies (RF’s) within a magnetic field on humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. An MRI technologist performs MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners and power injectors producing cross-sectional and 3D images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.
Core Competencies
Perform all the duties of an MRI Technologist I.
Capable of safely administering contrast or other imaging agents including the identification of incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Expected to assess a patient’s risk for allergic reaction to contrast media and other related medications prior to administration and following appropriate protocols for escalation of concerns.
Expected to evaluate lab values prior to administering contrast media or other related medications and beginning the ordered examination.
Capable of providing accurate explanations and instructions to the patient and family using age-appropriate language and verifying that the patient understands and agrees to the completion of the ordered exam.
Capable of performing ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting the patient’s ability and comfort.
Capable of adhering to policies and utilizing protocols to determine that expected outcomes have been met.
Capable of documenting deviations from protocol and/or patient-specific issues that may impact image quality.
Capable of notifying the appropriate health care provider when an immediate clinical response is necessary based on procedural findings, patient condition, or other relevant concerns that may impact patient safety or care.
Expected to timely complete all required post-processing, image display, and transfer for physician review.
Expected demonstrates timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.
Expected to routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on your level of competency.
Advanced Competencies: N/A
Knowledge and Competency
Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.
Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
Education, Certification & Experience
The position requires Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) or Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) within the first 90 days of hire.
