Job description

General Description:

The Designer-Drafter position will engage in the development of new electro-mechanical motion control devices with sub-micron precision, will be responsible for designing precision motion stages in 3D CAD software, generating models and drawings, and maintaining documentation consistent with our Quality Management System. Successful candidates will be able to design linear and rotary systems across a range of sizes and performance specifications.

This is accomplished through the following essential functions:

  • With direction from lead engineers, design electro-mechanical motion control devices with the established ability to integrate novel, robust, cost effective and aesthetic assemblies and products.
  • Use verbal, written, and visual presentation techniques and software to communicate designs and product developments to internal and external personnel.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software to generate component and assembly models and to perform FEA analysis and simulation.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software to generate fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and Bills of Material.
  • Document complete design packages from the development of estimate-quotation through the integration of an Engineering build and culminating in Engineering release into Supply Chain software systems.
  • Initiate and complete Engineering Change Requests and Engineering Change Orders for the formal release and revisions of design packages.
  • Author Internal Procedures and Work Instructions associated with Engineering functions.
  • Communicate with external customers toward the acquisition and integration of their data sheets, drawings, Engineering Change Notices, and Engineering Change Orders for contract manufacturing operations.
  • Work with external customer engineering toward the internal and external initiated revisions of their documentation packages as required to improve contract manufacturing operations.
  • Act as a primary Engineering representative to integrate both internal and customer-based Engineering output into the ERP system, while communicating developments.
  • Maintain constant communication with supervisor about job progress.
  • Clean and maintain cleanliness of work area.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

Work Experience & Knowledge Requirements:

  • 2+ years of drafting/design experience in a manufacturing environment (precision machining preferred).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar).
  • Mechanical aptitude working with precision hand tools, calipers, micrometers, indicators.
  • Basic understanding of machine design, motion control, metal fabrication and finishing.
  • Familiarity with materials, tolerances, and surface finishes used in precision manufacturing
  • Experience and proficiency with MS Office including Word, Outlook, and Excel.


Education Requirements:

  • Completion of a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or two (2) or more years’ related production experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associates degree in related discipline is strongly preferred.
