SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER – HARDWARE TEAM

PRIMARY FUNCTION

As a member of Team Protect, you'll be responsible for exploring new product ideas and developing technology platforms that support the SawStop mission.

You'll identify and initiate investigations of production technologies, prototype and test solutions for product features, and design and validate production designs that deliver an exceptional user experience. You'll use engineering principles to analyze designs and progress toward proof-of-concept models. You will create and use validated simulations to increase the number of designs that can be explored, increase the likelihood proofs of concept meet requirements, and optimize concepts.

Using both rapid prototyping and traditional fabrication techniques, you will create functional prototypes to evaluate new concepts. You'll work closely with cross functional team members, complete designs, develop and execute verification plans, and communicate results.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Technology Development
    • Research new concepts related to AIM technology
    • Discover and verify engineering principles behind technology
    • Leverage simulation tools, like ANSYS and custom-created scripts to explore bounding physics of various architecture options
    • Communicate physics to others
    • Develop technology platforms
    • Ensure proposed technologies can be manufactured and scaled to anticipated volumes
  • Product Concept Development
    • Apply technology to next generation woodworking tools and accessories
    • Optimize Active Injury Mitigation technology to support future product roadmap
    • Develop proof of concept equipment to demonstrate technology concepts in potential products
    • Develop product concepts / designs for project Board approval
      • Create 3D CAD models and prototypes for proof‑of‑concept designs
      • Translate Marketing requirements into Engineering specifications
    • Achieve technical maturity needed for inclusion in the product roadmap
      • Verify product function
      • Assess boundary conditions of solutions
    • Root cause analysis of issues to provide data driven resolution to problems
    • Create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings for components/assemblies within SolidWorks, conducting tolerance analysis and utilizing GD&T as appropriate
  • Clearly and effectively communicate to internal and external team members and stakeholders
  • Some international travel is required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates must show a hands‑on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts both verbally and visually.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 8+ years of demonstrated experience in product design
  • Demonstrated experience as a creative out of the box thinker who can quickly ideate and determine concept feasibility
  • Ability to think creatively to develop and implement ideas to solve complex problems
  • Experience designing for a variety of manufacturing processes and materials (e.g., injection molded plastic, sheet metal stamping, die cast aluminum, cast iron, and machining)
  • 3D CAD software experience (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Statistical analysis software experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across functional groups and diverse audiences
  • Hands on practical skills – ability to use basic shop tools, equipment, and measurement tools to build and test mockups and prototypes
  • Proven ability to take a product concept from a sketch to a realized system
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechatronics Engineering or similar
  • Experience with simulation software (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, NASTRAN)
  • Experience creating simulations based on first‑principles
  • Green belt in DFLSS or other statistical processing techniques
  • Experience with the Systems V‑model to define, design, and validate a design
  • Experience working with offshore manufacturing companies
  • Experience performing 3D CAD design simulation (e.g., Finite Element Analysis)
  • Prototyping and machine tool operation experience (e.g., milling machine, lathe, drill press, welding)
