They use computer graphic design software to model items such as architectural buildings, video games, and consumer product designs. This type of design may consider both functional and visual aspects. The work of a 3D designer can be found in almost any industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Designer, you need a solid background in art and design principles, proficiency in 3D modeling, and often a degree in graphic design, animation, or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max, and familiarity with rendering engines and CAD tools are typically required. Creativity, strong attention to detail, and effective communication skills help a 3D Designer excel in collaborative and client-driven environments. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality, visually compelling 3D assets that meet project objectives and client expectations.

Job description

Mechanical Designer / CAD Designer / 3D Designer

Tulsa, Oklahoma

$75,000 - $80,000

A Mechanical Designer / CAD Designer / 3D Designer is required for an on-site design role based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, working on custom packaged pump systems and skid-based equipment for moving water.

This Mechanical Designer role is suited to someone who can do more than drafting. You’ll need strong 3D solid modelling ability, an understanding of fluid flow, and the confidence to take submittals, specifications and design requirements and turn them into workable equipment designs with minimal supervision.

Mechanical Designer / CAD Designer / 3D Designer Benefits:

  • $75,000 - $80,000 salary
  • On-site role with direct access to fabrication, assembly and the shop floor
  • Work on custom packaged pump stations, skids, piping and fluid-handling systems
  • Opportunity to see your designs built and assembled in the same facility

The Mechanical Designer / CAD Designer / 3D Designer Role:

  • Design custom packaged pump stations, skid systems and associated piping layouts.
  • Work from submittal documents, specifications, standards and project requirements.
  • Create 3D models and design outputs using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Support designs for systems used across water movement, HVAC, municipal, industrial, booster and fire protection applications.
  • Liaise with project management, electrical, welding, fabrication, assembly and shop-floor teams.
  • Answer design-related questions as equipment moves through fabrication and assembly.
  • Use standard design guidelines while adapting layouts for custom project requirements.
  • Support internal project delivery with accurate, practical and buildable designs.

Mechanical Designer / CAD Designer / 3D Designer Requirements:

  • Experience as a Mechanical Designer, CAD Designer, 3D Designer, Design Engineer, Mechanical Drafter or similar hands-on design role.
  • Strong 3D solid modelling experience is essential.
  • Autodesk Inventor experience is preferred; strong SolidWorks experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with fluid flow, fluid handling, piping, packaged skids, pump systems, boilers, oil and gas, or similar fluid-control equipment.
  • Ability to design from submittals and specifications rather than simply produce drawings from instruction.
  • At least two years of practical design experience; internships alone will not be sufficient.
  • Good communication skills and confidence working with shop-floor, fabrication and assembly teams.
  • Competence with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat.

Desirable Experience:

  • Associate degree in engineering, mechanical design or a related technical discipline.
  • Previous experience designing packaged pump systems, skid-mounted equipment or water-moving systems.
  • Experience in an industrial manufacturing, fabrication or equipment-build environment.
