3D Design Intern information

What does a 3d design intern do?

A 3D Design Intern assists in creating three-dimensional models, visualizations, and animations for various projects, often using software such as Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max. Their tasks may include supporting senior designers, preparing digital assets, collaborating with other team members, and contributing creative ideas. The role provides hands-on experience in the design process, helps develop technical and artistic skills, and offers insight into the workflows of professional 3D design studios.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a 3d design intern?

To thrive as a 3D Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of 3D modeling principles, attention to detail, and foundational knowledge of design or related fields, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max is typically required, and experience with rendering engines or CAD tools is a plus. Strong communication, creativity, and the ability to accept feedback are important soft skills for collaborating and refining designs. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality 3D assets, meeting project requirements, and succeeding in a dynamic, creative environment.

What types of projects and software tools can a 3d design intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a 3D Design Intern, you'll typically work on a variety of projects ranging from product prototypes and architectural visualizations to animations and digital assets for games or marketing. Most companies use industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, 3ds Max, and Adobe Creative Suite. You'll often collaborate closely with senior designers, engineers, and marketing teams to ensure your models meet both aesthetic and technical requirements. This hands-on experience not only builds your technical skills but also gives you insight into workflow, project management, and teamwork within a creative environment.

What is the difference between 3D Design Intern vs 3D Modeling Assistant?

Aspect3D Design Intern3D Modeling Assistant
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of design, art, or related programsSimilar educational background, often with some technical training
Work EnvironmentInternship settings in design studios, animation, or gaming companiesSupport roles in 3D modeling teams within creative or tech industries
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies seeking entry-level design supportCommon in studios requiring assistance with 3D asset creation

The main difference is that a 3D Design Intern typically focuses on gaining broad experience in design projects, while a 3D Modeling Assistant specializes in supporting the creation of 3D models. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and are found in creative industries, but the intern role may involve a wider range of tasks, including concept development and collaboration.

Job description

Description

Westwood Professional Services

The Site Design Intern will join a civil engineering team supporting the site layout, grading, drainage, and access road design of utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Projects range from preliminary site layout studies to full construction document packages for renewable energy developers, IPPs, and utility clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply civil engineering coursework to real-world renewable energy infrastructure projects.

As a Site Design Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards, including AASHTO, local grading and stormwater codes, and NRCS guidance, in the civil design process and will assist Senior Engineers in the preparation of grading plans, drainage designs, erosion control plans, and construction documents.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with engineers to obtain training and build foundational proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design software used by Site Design Engineers.
  • Assist in the preparation of grading, drainage, erosion and sediment control, and access road plans for solar, wind, and BESS sites.
  • Support earthwork and stormwater calculations, including cut/fill balancing and pond sizing, under the guidance of Senior Engineers.
  • Help prepare construction documents, including plan and profile sheets, details, and quantity takeoffs.
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across renewable energy projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to gather field data and interface directly with clients and contractors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering program, preferably in Civil Engineering.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in civil site design or land development.
  • Experience with technical design software including AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD, or other relevant engineering tools.
