3D Computer Vision information

What is 3D computer vision?

3D computer vision is a field within computer science and artificial intelligence that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand visual information from the world in three dimensions. Unlike traditional 2D computer vision, which works with flat images, 3D computer vision uses data from sources like stereo cameras, LiDAR, or depth sensors to reconstruct and analyze the shape, size, and position of objects in a scene. This technology is crucial for applications such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, augmented reality, and medical imaging. By understanding the spatial relationships between objects, 3D computer vision systems can enable machines to interact more effectively with their environment.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D computer vision engineers during project development?

3D Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as managing noisy or incomplete data from sensors, ensuring real-time processing speeds, and integrating algorithms with various hardware platforms. Additionally, adapting solutions to diverse environments—such as changing lighting conditions or object occlusions—requires robust model design and continual testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, is key to overcoming these challenges and successfully deploying 3D vision applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3d computer vision engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in computer vision, mathematics (especially linear algebra and geometry), and programming, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in Python or C++, experience with libraries like OpenCV and PCL, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective teamwork help candidates excel in developing novel algorithms and collaborating across disciplines. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating innovative 3D perception systems that meet real-world challenges and drive advancements in areas like robotics, AR/VR, and autonomous vehicles.

The successful candidate will support engineers in the design and fabrication of custom tooling, fixtures, and molds used for research, testing, and prototype development. This position combines CAD design, additive manufacturing, hands-on fabrication, and laboratory support.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create and modify 2D drawings and 3D CAD models for tooling, fixtures, molds, and engineering projects.
  • Design, build, and refine custom fill molds using additive manufacturing (FDM 3D printing).
  • Prepare CAD files for manufacturing, including exporting print-ready models and engineering drawings.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot both small-format and large-format 3D printers.
  • Understand basic additive manufacturing concepts including material selection, print orientation, support generation, and post-processing.
  • Assemble, modify, and test mechanical components and prototype assemblies.
  • Assist engineers with prototype development, mechanical testing, data collection, and documentation.
  • Perform basic shop tasks including drilling, cutting, tapping, light machining, sanding, and assembly.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, drawings, and revision control.
  • Support laboratory setup, equipment maintenance, calibration, and organization.
  • Procure engineering materials and maintain inventory of supplies and printing materials.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Mechanical/ Structural Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Additive Manufacturing Technology, or other related technical field.
  • Entry level to three (3) years of experience in a mechanical engineering, manufacturing, prototype, fabrication, or engineering support role.
  • Experience creating 2D engineering drawings and 3D CAD models.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Basic understanding of 3D printing/additive manufacturing processes.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to design, build, troubleshoot, and assemble mechanical components.
  • Comfortable working with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds individually and 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, or AutoCAD.
  • Experience operating FDM/FFF 3D printers, including both desktop and large-format systems.
  • Familiarity with common printing materials such as PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, Nylon, TPU, or carbon fiber reinforced materials.
  • Experience designing parts specifically for additive manufacturing.
  • Basic machining experience including drill press, band saw, belt sander, milling machine, or lathe.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and prototype development.
  • Familiarity with engineering documentation and revision control.
  • Experience supporting engineering projects in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting DoD, US Navy, or US Marine Corps programs is a plus.
