Job description

Job Summary

The Electrician performs skilled electrical work in support of the operations and maintenance of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). This position is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, installing, inspecting, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment in a critical healthcare environment. The Electrician ensures all work complies with National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA standards, Joint Commission requirements, and facility safety policies.

The Electrician supports mission-critical hospital operations and must respond to emergency electrical issues affecting patient care areas, medical equipment, and essential building systems.

Primary Job Functions

  • Perform installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical systems up to and including 480V three-phase systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical issues involving lighting systems, panels, transformers, motors, disconnects, relays, and circuit breakers.
  • Maintain and repair emergency power systems including generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), UPS systems, and emergency lighting.
  • Perform electrical support for critical systems such as HVAC equipment, medical facility power distribution, pumps, and mechanical systems.
  • Install conduit (EMT, rigid, flex), wiring, raceways, and electrical devices in accordance with NEC and local codes.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on electrical distribution systems and document findings.
  • Use meters and diagnostic tools to perform voltage, amperage, continuity, and insulation resistance testing.
  • Respond to urgent work orders, service calls, and after-hours emergencies as required.
  • Support outage planning, electrical shutdowns, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe restoration of power.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Coordinate with other trades (HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, controls) to complete facility repairs and projects.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 99, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and WRNMMC safety requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including work orders, inspection logs, PM records, and material usage.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and comply with all infection control and hospital safety requirements.

Required Education, Experience and Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as an electrician in commercial, industrial, or healthcare facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, troubleshooting, and repair methods.
  • Experience working with 480/277V, 208/120V, and 24V control systems.
  • Ability to safely work in a mission-critical environment where outages impact hospital operations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain access credentials for a federal installation (background screening required).
  • OSHA 10 preferred or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Maryland Journeyman Electrician License preferred (or ability to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a hospital or medical facility environment.
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission standards and requirements.
  • Experience with medium voltage systems (if applicable).
  • Experience working with BAS/controls wiring support.
  • Prior military base or federal facility experience.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • NFPA 70E training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, arc flash awareness, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to urgent maintenance calls.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with hospital staff, leadership, and customers.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawlspaces, and patient-care environments.
  • Work is performed in an active hospital environment requiring professionalism, attention to detail, and strict adherence to safety and infection control practices. The Electrician may work around patients, staff, and sensitive medical operations. Noise, dust, heat, and confined spaces may be encountered.

Additional Requirements

  • Must pass background investigation and meet WRNMMC base access requirements.
  • Must follow all hospital policies related to safety, conduct, and confidentiality.
  • Must be available for rotating shifts, overtime, and emergency call-back as needed.
