1099 Installer information

What is a 1099 installer?

A 1099 Installer is an independent contractor who installs products or equipment for companies or clients, typically under a non-employee arrangement. The term '1099' refers to the IRS form used to report income for independent contractors. Unlike full-time employees, 1099 Installers are responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and work expenses. They often have flexible schedules and may work for multiple companies or clients at the same time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Installer, you need hands-on installation experience, technical aptitude, and familiarity with relevant trade practices, often backed by vocational training or certifications. Proficiency with power tools, installation software, and compliance with safety standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving, time management, and customer service skills help you excel in independent work and client interactions. These skills ensure installations are completed efficiently, safely, and to customer satisfaction, which is vital for maintaining a steady stream of contract work.

What are the typical challenges a 1099 installer might face when managing multiple projects independently?

As a 1099 Installer, you are responsible for juggling multiple client projects, which requires excellent time management and organizational skills. Unlike W-2 employees, you handle your own scheduling, invoicing, and sometimes even sourcing of materials, which can be challenging during peak seasons. Additionally, maintaining consistent communication with clients and other contractors is crucial to ensure projects stay on track. Being proactive in problem-solving and adaptable to changing requirements will help you succeed in this role.

Both 1099 Installer and 1099 Cable Technician roles involve on-site installation work and often require similar certifications related to wiring and safety standards. The main difference lies in the specific industry focus: 1099 Installers may work across various industries, while 1099 Cable Technicians specialize in cable and telecommunications wiring. Both roles are typically contracted positions, offering flexibility but requiring self-management and industry-specific knowledge.

How do you become a 1099 installer?

To become a 1099 installer, you typically need to have relevant technical skills, such as electrical or mechanical knowledge, and often require a valid driver's license. Many installers work as independent contractors, so setting up a business entity, obtaining necessary certifications, and securing liability insurance are important steps. Experience with tools and installation procedures is also beneficial for working as a 1099 installer.

Job description

Pergola & Motorized Screen Installer - Subcontractor (1099)

StruXure (under D5 Capital Holdings) is a leading provider of premium outdoor living solutions, specializing in fully customizable motorized pergolas and smart outdoor environments. We help customers transform their outdoor spaces into functional, year-round extensions of their home or business. We operate at the intersection of design, precision fabrication, and skilled installation, and as we continue to grow, we're looking for motivated, energetic individuals to join our team.

About the Role

We're seeking experienced Installers to perform structure installation work under our Subcontractor Agreement. This is a 1099 independent contractor position — you run your own business, provide your own crew, labor, tools, equipment, and transportation, and work closely with our project managers to bring each project to life within established project schedules and timelines. You get paid for completed, quality work.

This opportunity is a strong fit for established outdoor living contractors, including deck builders, patio cover and pergola installers, shade structure crews, hardscape and paver contractors, exterior carpentry teams, awning installers, poolside structure contractors, and general construction subcontractors with experience building custom backyard or commercial outdoor spaces.

What You'll Do

  • Install StruXure pergolas and louvered roof systems per project specifications and manufacturer standards
  • Perform site prep, framing, mounting, electrical coordination (as applicable), and finish work
  • Complete punch list, warranty, and corrective work as needed
  • Coordinate scheduling and sequencing with the StruXure project team
  • Maintain a clean, safe job site and follow all applicable building codes and OSHA safety standards
  • Supply your own labor, tools, equipment, and transportation to job sites

What You Bring

Required:

  • Prior experience in construction, carpentry, deck/patio structures, or similar outdoor living installation
  • Own tools, equipment, and reliable transportation
  • Valid business license (state/local, as applicable)
  • Ability to provide a completed W-9
  • General Liability Insurance: $1,000,000 per occurrence / $2,000,000 aggregate, with StruXure/D5 Capital Holdings named as Additional Insured
  • Auto Liability Insurance: $500,000 combined single limit (required for all vendors with jobsite delivery or presence)
  • Workers' Compensation coverage for any workers you employ (or a Declaration of Independent Contractor Status if working solo)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Strong workmanship standards and comfort working independently to project specs
  • Willingness to execute a Subcontractor Agreement prior to starting work

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Be your own boss — run your business while working with a growing, premium outdoor living brand
  • Consistent project flow backed by an established project management team
  • Paid for completed, quality work — no ambiguity in scope or expectations
  • Join a trusted trade partner network with room to grow as StruXure expands

Pay & Terms

  • Paid per completed, verified work - estimated $150-200 per hour
  • Progress payments issued on a bi-weekly basis for accepted work
  • Invoices due by 12:00 PM (noon) each Monday for that billing cycle
  • Standard 10% retainage applies per Work Order (up to $5,000 max), released one year after final completion

Independent contractors are responsible for managing their own business operations, taxes, insurance, licensing, labor, tools, equipment, transportation, and compliance obligations. Work is assigned by project or Work Order and must be completed according to StruXure project requirements, approved schedules, site conditions, and quality standards.

D5 Capital portfolio is an equal opportunity company that partners with independent contractors and does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected status.
