1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS, and SQL), as well as experience with frameworks like React, Node.js, or Django. Familiarity with cloud platforms, version control systems like Git, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer) are typically valuable. Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving skills are crucial for meeting project deadlines and collaborating with diverse clients. These skills enable contractors to deliver high-quality, end-to-end solutions efficiently while adapting to varying project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developers when managing multiple client projects?

As a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer, one of the main challenges is effectively balancing multiple client projects with varying requirements and deadlines. Contractors are responsible for their own time management, communication, and project prioritization, which can be demanding without the structure of a traditional team. It's important to set clear expectations with clients, use project management tools, and maintain transparent communication to ensure all deliverables are met. Additionally, staying up-to-date with both front-end and back-end technologies is essential, as clients often expect versatile technical expertise.

What is a 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer?

A 1099 Contractor Full Stack Developer is a self-employed professional who is hired to work on both front-end and back-end aspects of web development projects. The '1099' refers to the IRS form used to report income for independent contractors in the U.S., meaning they are not employees but work on a contractual basis. These developers typically manage their own taxes, work for multiple clients, and have flexibility in choosing their projects. They are responsible for delivering complete web solutions, from designing user interfaces to building and maintaining server-side logic.

Job description

About Blank Metal
Blank Metal is an AI-native engineering company that partners with enterprises to deliver production AI fast. We blend strategic insight with hands-on execution - shipping high-impact systems that turn AI initiatives into measurable business results.
We're builders, not theorists. Our team of seasoned engineers, designers, and strategists work across industries to create AI applications that actually get used - and make a difference.
You'll join a seasoned professional services team known for high-touch, high-quality work that drives real impact. Our culture thrives on open dialogue, collaborative problem-solving, and a healthy dose of laughter. We value your voice, your ideas, and your entrepreneurial spirit-come help us evolve our services and shape our journey.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design scalable service/micro-service patterns, database schemas, caching layers, and authentication flows
  • Ship production-grade code across front-end (React/TypeScript) and back-end (Node, Go, or JVM) with strong test coverage
  • Integrate model endpoints, manage real-time inference, and implement robust error-handling and fallback mechanisms
  • Drive code-review rigor, CI/CD pipeline health, and observability instrumentation
  • Pair-program, lead brown-bag sessions, and advise junior engineers on technical decisions
  • Collaborate with UX/Product, AI/ML Practice, and ML Ops teams to deliver client solutions
  • Contribute to engineering best practices and help raise the team's technical bar

About you
  • 5-8 years of full-stack development experience, with strength in both modern front-end and cloud-native back-end stacks
  • Experience designing and operating systems in AWS, GCP, or Azure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CDK)
  • Solid understanding of security, performance tuning, and API versioning best practices
  • Comfortable in dynamic, client-facing environments-startup or consulting experience preferred
  • Strong communicator and collaborator with a passion for building high-impact solutions
  • Curious, adaptable, and energized by solving complex problems across industries

Why You'll Love It Here
  • Build AI that ships - every project ends in a live deployment, not a slide deck
  • Craft meets velocity - we obsess over quality while delivering at startup speed
  • Outcome-driven model - our projects align with client success, not billable hours
  • AI-native culture - you'll work with peers who deeply understand modern AI's potential and limits
  • Backed to build - supported by $3M in seed funding from Rally Ventures, Traction
    Capital, and PurePlay Partners
  • Real collaboration - open conversations, shared ownership, and space to bring your voice and creativity
