Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This role focuses on performing high-quality phlebotomy and specimen processing in a fast-paced clinical environment serving a diverse patient population, including pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. The phlebotomist supports daily laboratory operations by collecting, labeling, processing, and preparing specimens for testing and transport while maintaining strict compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards. The position requires a high level of independence, compassion, and professionalism, as you will often work as the primary laboratory representative at busy patient service centers and medical offices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws accurately and safely using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and obstetric/gynecologic populations.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, helping them feel informed and comfortable throughout the process.
  • Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens such as urine and fecal samples according to established laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against provider orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following all protocol requirements to preserve specimen quality.
  • Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following detailed procedures for each type of test.
  • Perform specimen handling and management tasks, including sample preparation, sample storage, and proper use of centrifuges and other laboratory equipment.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of hands-on experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws on pediatric patients, including infants and toddlers.
  • Experience in phlebotomy, including venipuncture, blood draws, and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Strong skills in specimen handling, specimen management, and specimen storage, including proper labeling, centrifugation, splitting, and freezing.
  • Ability to accurately perform sample preparation and use centrifuges and other laboratory equipment safely and effectively.
  • Proficiency with data entry and order entry in laboratory or clinical systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • Ability to read and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions with high attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Approximately 2 years of phlebotomy experience in varied clinical settings such as patient service centers, physician offices, and hospitals is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of pediatric specimen collection experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in obstetrics/gynecology or fertility-focused environments, including familiarity with time-sensitive tests such as BETA draws, is highly beneficial.
  • Experience working in busy clinical offices and managing high patient volumes while maintaining quality and compassion.
  • Ability to safely position and hold babies and toddlers during blood draws to ensure safe and effective collection.
  • Experience with drug screening, hair collection, paternity testing, and pediatric-focused collections is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic medical record platforms, including Cerner, is a plus.

Work Environment

This position is primarily day shift, Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at patient service centers and 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at in-office phlebotomy locations. The home base is in Indianapolis with regular travel around the north side of the city and occasional coverage at a site in West Lafayette. Mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. You will work in busy clinical environments, including obstetrics/gynecology offices and patient service centers that handle a high volume of patients, including those undergoing fertility evaluations, pregnancy-related testing, pediatric visits, drug screens, hair collections, and paternity testing. The role involves frequent use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and requires careful handling and storage of biological specimens in accordance with specific temperature and transport protocols. The environment emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and infection control, with adherence to OSHA and DEP standards. Professional clinical attire appropriate for direct patient care and laboratory work is expected, and you will collaborate closely with clinical staff while often serving as one of two phlebotomists in a busy office or as the sole laboratory representative at a site
