Job Summary:
As the Construction Laborer, you will ultimately be responsible for supporting underground construction activities, preparing and maintaining job sites, and assisting construction crews with daily field operations. You will safely operate tools and equipment, install underground infrastructure, and deliver efficient, high-quality construction support. As the Construction Laborer, your customers are construction crews, project managers, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe work practices, dependable field support, and quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Attend and participate in daily job-specific safety and huddle meetings
- Operate tamping equipment in accordance with company specifications and safety requirements
- Inspect tools, machines, and equipment and assist with routine maintenance
- Load, unload, and prepare materials, tools, and equipment for daily operations
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas throughout the project
- Inspect and safely operate hand tools and small equipment
- Assist equipment operators with trench excavation, shoring installation, and backfilling activities
- Dig entry and exit pits for underground construction operations
- Install conduit in open trenches and proof conduit systems
- Pothole existing underground utilities to verify utility locations
- Assist with rigging and setting structures
- Assist with concrete forming, pouring, asphalt preparation, and placement
- Safely operate company vehicles and ensure proper utilization of assigned equipment
- Ensure work is completed in compliance with customer requirements and company standards
- Promote and maintain compliance with all company safety policies and procedures
- Complete required safety training annually
- Report injuries, incidents, and unsafe conditions to the Foreman immediately
- Assist coworkers in maintaining a clean and organized job site at the end of each shift
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver's license
- OSHA 10 Certification preferred
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
- Subject to random drug screenings
Experience
- Previous construction or outdoor labor experience preferred
- Experience working in underground utility or telecommunications construction preferred
- Experience operating small equipment and hand tools preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with crew members, leadership, and clients
- Strong understanding of construction safety procedures and policies
- Ability to safely lift up to 75 pounds
- Excellent manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual acuity (with corrective lenses if required)
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as business needs require
- Willingness to work outdoors, in inclement weather, and at elevated heights
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience and knowledge of underground utility construction
- Experience operating small construction equipment and hand tools
- OSHA 10 Certification
- Experience supporting telecommunications or utility construction projects
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing 40–90 pounds
- Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of surrounding personnel, equipment, and job site activity
- Ability to safely work around heavy equipment and operate company vehicles
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb for extended periods
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders safely
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required safety gear
