Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Volunteer Coordinator serves at the point of contact for all volunteers. This serves to recruit, coordinate, and encourage volunteers to become involved with The Salvation Army in Newark and to advance the mission of The Salvation Army by increasing awareness through various methods of outreach.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Address organizations, clubs and businesses with volunteer opportunities
  • Public speaking engagements and presentations as needed for volunteer recruitment
  • Create and maintain a volunteer file
  • Responsible for obtaining volunteer background checks and maintaining all volunteer records for Keepsafe.
  • Responsible for obtaining and maintaining volunteer background checks for driving official vehicles
  • Recruit and schedule volunteers for the various programs and ministries
  • Responsible for Food Pantry Program
  • Maintain accurate/current volunteers for the various programs and ministries
  • Track volunteer hours each month for statistics and report to statisticians
  • Recruit and schedule groups for Christmas and other holiday programming
  • Communicate with new media about volunteer opportunities and awareness of special events.
  • Coordinate all volunteer recruitment efforts for all programs and ministries.
  • Pick up Donations when necessary (Coordinate all pickups as needed)
  • Host an annual volunteer appreciation event
  • Provide tours of the facility and communicate our service outreach efforts in the community
  • Assist with all fundraising events
  • Maintain a tidy, welcoming, and organized front desk environment.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by Commanding Officer.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly oversee and manage all individual and group volunteers, ensuring proper orientation, scheduling, and support throughout their service.


MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma
  • Some College preferred
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be accepted as an insured driver with The Salvation Army
  • Must be able to pass the Salvation Army’s driving program for driving official vehicles
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office Tools and type with general efficiency
  • Must be able to communicate in fluent English
  • Must have general working knowledge of office tools (computer, copier, phones, etc)

SPECIAL SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Basic Computer Skills (Microsoft 260, Excel)
  • Typing
  • Telephone
  • Ability to show love and compassion to people who volunteer with our programs
  • Strong community relations skills, leadership ability and organization skills
  • Strong sense of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good presence for community outreach
  • Good assessment skills and able to address difficult situations with authority and compassion
  • Demonstrate leadership and mentoring in a team environment required
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and multi-task


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • 40% sitting, bending, stretching (Inside)
  • 20% lifting, squatting, stretching, carrying up to 25 lbs. (during seasonal duties- Inside & outdoors)
  • 30% walking, standing (inside and outdoors)
  • 10% Driving (outside)
