Job description

Battelle delivers when others can't. We conduct research and development, manage national laboratories, design and manufacture products and deliver critical services for our clients-whether they are a multi-national corporation, a small start-up or a government agency.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Summary
Battelle is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer with deep expertise in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support the development and evolution of advanced communications, sensing, autonomy, and Radio Frequency-enabled systems within the Advanced Microsystems Solutions (AMS) portfolio. This role will serve as a key contributor in establishing and maintaining the digital engineering foundation for the RavenStar family of products and related programs.
The successful candidate will lead the development of system architectures, requirements models, interface definitions, and digital engineering artifacts using Cameo Systems Modeler and SysML. The position will work closely with program managers, chief engineers, and technical teams to capture, model, and maintain complex system architectures across multiple products and development efforts.
This position is based in Columbus, Ohio and supports a growing portfolio of advanced technology programs spanning communications, sensing, electronic warfare, autonomy, and software-defined systems.
Responsibilities
Model-Based Systems Engineering (Primary Focus)
  • Lead development and maintenance of MBSE artifacts using Cameo Systems Modeler and SysML.
  • Develop and maintain system architectures, operational concepts, requirements models, interface definitions, and system behavior models.
  • Establish and manage digital engineering frameworks supporting multiple products and programs.
  • Create system models that provide traceability from customer needs and requirements through architecture, design, verification, and validation.
  • Support development of digital engineering strategies and MBSE best practices across the organization.
  • Maintain model consistency, configuration control, and technical baselines across evolving product lines.
  • Facilitate model-based technical reviews and architecture assessments.

Systems Architecture & Design
  • Translate customer needs, mission objectives, and operational concepts into structured system architectures.
  • Perform system-level trade studies and architectural analyses to evaluate technical alternatives.
  • Define system decomposition, interfaces, and functional allocations across hardware, software, firmware, and communications subsystems.
  • Support architecture development throughout the full lifecycle from concept through deployment and sustainment.
  • Contribute to major engineering reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, and SVR.

Requirements Engineering & Digital Thread
  • Capture, define, and manage system-level requirements and associated traceability.
  • Flow requirements through system, subsystem, and component levels.
  • Maintain bidirectional traceability between requirements, architecture, interfaces, verification, and validation activities.
  • Develop and maintain model-driven verification and validation strategies.
  • Support integration between Cameo, requirements management tools, and other engineering repositories.

Cross-Functional Technical Leadership
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, RF, test, and integration teams to ensure architectural consistency across programs.
  • Work with program leadership to establish technical roadmaps and product evolution strategies.
  • Serve as a technical focal point for architecture definition and systems engineering processes.
  • Support proposal efforts, customer engagements, and internal research initiatives.
  • Help advance MBSE adoption and digital engineering capabilities throughout the AMS organization.

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of systems engineering experience developing complex systems.
  • Demonstrated experience applying MBSE methodologies throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Advanced proficiency with Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw) and SysML.
  • Experience developing: Operational architectures, Functional architectures, Logical architectures, Interface definitions, Requirements traceability models, and Verification and validation models
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering processes including requirements development, architecture design, integration, verification, validation, and risk management.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading MBSE implementation efforts on complex defense or aerospace programs.
  • Experience developing digital engineering environments aligned with DoD Digital Engineering Strategy objectives.
  • Familiarity with DoDAF, UAF, SysML v2, or related architecture frameworks.
  • Experience integrating Cameo with requirements management tools such as DOORS or DOORS Next.
  • Experience supporting development of digital twins, digital threads, or model-centric engineering environments.
  • Knowledge of communications, RF, sensing, autonomy, electronic warfare, or software-defined systems.
  • Experience with MBSE and digital engineering toolchains, including Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw), IBM Rhapsody, IBM DOORS/DOORS Next, Windchill, Cradle, or similar tools.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, scripting, or model automation.
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance.
