What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Rust position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rust Developer, you need strong programming abilities in Rust, a solid understanding of systems programming concepts, and typically a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Cargo, Git, and CI/CD pipelines, as well as knowledge of platforms such as Linux, is often expected. Excellent problem-solving, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help developers excel when working on complex software projects within teams. These skills are crucial for building robust, high-performance applications while ensuring maintainability and scalability in demanding technology environments.

What is a Rust job?

A Rust job typically involves developing software using the Rust programming language, which is known for its memory safety, performance, and concurrency features. Rust developers work on system programming, web assembly, backend services, and embedded systems. Many Rust jobs are in industries requiring high-performance and secure applications, such as finance, blockchain, and networking. Employers look for proficiency in Rust, knowledge of software development best practices, and experience with related tools and frameworks.

What are the most common challenges faced by Rust Developers in their day-to-day work?

Rust Developers often encounter challenges related to borrowing and ownership concepts, which are core features that ensure memory safety but can also make debugging and designing programs more difficult for those new to the language. Additionally, as Rust is still relatively young compared to some other languages, developers may face limited third-party library support or need to contribute to open-source tools themselves. However, working in teams allows for knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving, making it easier to overcome these obstacles. Embracing a growth mindset and participating in the active Rust community can help developers quickly adapt and thrive in this evolving field.

You should be able to work closely with financial advisors and strategic partners at an executive or leadership level to build a sales pipeline, win retirement plans, and develop strategic relationships. You should feel as comfortable on the phone cold calling prospects as you do developing deep, meaningful relationships with financial advisors.

As a FinTech firm, we take a different approach to sales than traditional incumbents. We believe that through strategic partnerships, a virtual sales approach, and teamwork, salespeople can command impressive plan sales volumes and become true partners to the advisors they work with. Expect to become an expert at demoing software, outlining our administrative capabilities, and how Vestwell's technology works. The right hire is highly relationship oriented and transactional, with a passion to learn and grow.

The ideal candidate has proven experience selling in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Rust Belt regions. Extensive travel is required to meet with clients and prospects to perform your sales activities.

What Will You Be Doing?

You will be the primary driver for gaining distribution and converting retirement plans within your assigned region. Beyond this baseline, your responsibilities include providing leadership, deep expertise, and strategic support to the broader team.

  • Identify, develop, and convert strategic partnerships with RIA Aggregators, Broker/Dealers, TPAs, Payroll Providers, Banks, and other key partners within your sales region.
  • Develop, own, and manage a robust retirement plan sales pipeline, leveraging existing relationships and proactively prospecting for new clients, including strategic outreach and cold calling.
  • Consulting with prospects about possible plan features or plan types that may align with their workforce and assessing whether a standalone plan or aggregated plan would work best for the prospect's demographics and business goals.
  • Convert retirement plan opportunities into sales, applying judgment and strategic thinking through a repeatable, scalable process in partnership with your internal sales team.
  • Deliver product demonstrations and maintain deep expertise in retirement plan record-keeping, administration, and technology, serving as a trusted advisor to prospects and clients.
  • Design and manage hand-off processes to Vestwell's implementation and client success teams, ensuring a seamless client experience that drives repeat business.
  • Own and deliver on plan sales and revenue targets, exercising discretion in prioritization and approach to achieve results.
  • Maintain accountability for plan sponsor revenue generation within your region, influencing outcomes through relationship management, strategic execution, and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

The Necessities

  • 5+ years in a B2B sales, preferably in retirement, FinTech, wealth, or a similar industry
  • Intimate knowledge of how retirement plan advisors build, manage, and grow their practice
  • Clear understanding and ability to articulate partnerships across multiple channels
  • Consistent track record managing and leading sales regions and exceeding sales targets
  • Ability to carry a plan sale over the entire sales cycle from prospecting to conversion
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for creating a top-notch selling environment and processes
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills are a must

  • Experience selling retirement plan record-keeping and administration is a very, very strong plus
  • Previous coverage of the small and emerging corporate retirement plan market
  • Previously covered the sales region being hired
  • Strong understanding of what a record-keeper, TPA, and 3(16) administrator does
  • Any FS certifications are a plus, eg: Series 65, Series 7, CFA, etc.

This role will be based in the Greater Ohio region, in a remote capacity.
