Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineer to serve as the Relief Valve & Relief Systems Technical Authority supporting downstream refining operations across multiple refinery sites in Ohio.

This is a high-impact specialist leadership role responsible for providing expert pressure relief engineering guidance, strengthening technical assurance programs, and driving consistency across relief valve and flare system practices. The successful candidate will play a critical role in process safety, regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and operational reliability while serving as a trusted technical resource to engineering and site leadership teams.

This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with deep expertise in pressure relief systems who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, mentoring others, and influencing engineering standards across a large operating organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the companys technical authority for relief valve and relief system engineering across downstream refinery operations
  • Lead technical reviews, troubleshooting efforts, and approvals for pressure relief device sizing and disposal system calculations
  • Drive standardization and best practices across refinery sites to improve safety, reliability, and operational consistency
  • Support risk reduction initiatives through participation in HAZOPs, flare risk assessments, and incident investigations
  • Evaluate and approve API 520/521 and flare system design exceptions while ensuring consistent site governance
  • Develop and maintain technical assurance and training programs focused on relief system engineering capabilities
  • Guide engineering teams in the development of pressure relief and flare system documentation and design practices
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, and Process Engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 8+ years of experience in refining, upstream, or petrochemical operations, including focused experience in pressure relief system design and analysis
  • Strong expertise in relief valve sizing, flare systems, overpressure protection, and disposal system calculations
  • Working knowledge of industry standards including API 520/521 and API RP 576
  • Experience with process simulation and hydraulic modeling tools such as HYSYS, Aspen Flare Analyzer, PetroSim, PRO/II, or AFT Fathom
  • Solid understanding of process engineering fundamentals including PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic calculations, and overpressure scenario development
  • Experience supporting front-end engineering and equipment design activities is strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence multidisciplinary technical teams
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
