Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician
Location: Columbus, OH
Pay Range: $20-23/hr
Position Type: 1-Year Contract
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician to join their Vivarium team within a leading Genetic Therapies Center of Excellence in Columbus, OH. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in laboratory animal science and biomedical research to gain hands-on experience supporting animal welfare, colony management, and preclinical research.
Working under the guidance of Senior Veterinary Technicians, the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician will help ensure the health and well-being of research rodents while maintaining compliance with animal welfare and GLP standards.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with daily monitoring and basic treatments of laboratory rodents.
  • Perform body weight measurements and routine health assessments.
  • Conduct rodent examinations and detailed clinical observations.
  • Receive incoming animals and perform microchip implantation.
  • Process blood samples and assist with specimen handling.
  • Support weaning activities and limited necropsy procedures as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with study technicians and laboratory leadership regarding animal health and study activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with GLP and animal welfare regulations.
  • Perform quality control (QC) checks on assigned tasks.
  • Operate laboratory equipment and utilize supplies following established safety procedures.
  • Participate in a rotating weekend and holiday schedule.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 0-2 years of experience working with laboratory animals or in a related scientific environment.
  • ALAT (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely handle rodents and identify basic health concerns is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented research environment.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and frequently bend, reach, and move throughout the workday.
  • Comfortable working in an environment with exposure to rodent fur and dander.
  • Must avoid contact with rodent species outside of work to protect research integrity.
