Job Summary
Battelle's Defense and Material Solutions Business Unit is currently seeking a Maritime Electrical Engineer. This position is located at Columbus, OH.
We are seeking experienced maritime electrical engineers who have successfully designed and integrated electrical systems in maritime environments.
The person selected for this position will be responsible for the design, development, test, and production of complex electronic and electro-mechanical systems for use in maritime environments. The person filling this position will be expected to be able to work independently or function as part of a technical team which may be composed of engineers, technicians, and support staff. This person will lead tasks such as designing electrical schematics, writing embedded firmware, compiling and evaluating design and test data, and preparing technical specifications. The person will be capable of finding solutions and answers beyond their area of expertise.
Assignments may involve research for device and technology development; the design, build and integration of hardware and software components for computing systems and networks; and development of specifications for assigned system components.
Responsibilities
  • Design innovative electrical solutions for maritime systems
  • Shape system architecture through concept generation, requirements definition, and test planning
  • Collaborate hands-on with technicians in lab assembly and testing to validate and refine designs
  • Accountably lead and manage tasks within budget and schedule, partnering with program managers
  • Support proposal development and capture management for government contracts
  • Communicate technical results and project progress to leadership and customers, both verbally and in writing
  • Mentor and coach junior staff
  • Contribute to Independent Research and Development (IR&D) studies
  • Desire to continually learn and grow both in technical competency and project responsibilities

Key Qualifications
  • Proven experience designing electrical components and subsystems for maritime environments
  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited electrical/computer engineering program with 3-5 years of experience OR master's degree in a related field with 1-4 years of experience OR PhD in a related field
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance at the TS/SCI level
  • Experience with underwater systems
  • Physically fit to accomplish required tasks including working from ladders and in confined spaces
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude, good character, and eagerness to take on technical challenges
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving ability and commitment to quality results under schedule deadlines

Preferred Qualifications
  • US citizenship with active DOD Level 5 Top Secret (TS) clearance
  • Master's and/or PhD in a related field (i.e. Electrical/Computer Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Physics, etc.)
  • Significant mathematical background - math courses or related engineering courses such as control systems, signal processing, etc.
  • Experience with fiber optic interfaces in harsh environments and optical network design
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Power Electronics, Analog Electronics, PCB Design, Modeling and Simulation, Sonar, High Voltage, Robotics/Autonomous Systems, Sensors (EO/IR/LIDAR etc.)

Travel: Up to 10% (project dependent)
