Job description

As the Director of Public Policy, you provide expert guidance to our county members, key partners, and stakeholders on legal and policy matters related to the child support program. Your role is pivotal in keeping our members informed about legislative and regulatory developments, which means you work closely with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Ohio Office of Child Support, the Ohio General Assembly and the Ohio Judicial Conference.

Your role develops and delivers training programs for child support attorneys and hearing officers to ensure they are well informed and educated on important child support related topics. You will also be instrumental in providing subject matter expertise to outside stakeholders such as the courts and private bar in furtherance of program goals.

Beyond your daily responsibilities, you will be an integral part of our team, supporting events and special initiatives, as well as contributing to the work of our committees

Juris Doctorate degree and current license to practice law in the State of Ohio.

Maintains good standing with the Supreme Court of Ohio, including but not limited to, completing all required continuing legal education hours and maintaining current registration.

Three or more years' experience in state public policy, advocacy, or government affairs, or experience serving as a county child support agency attorney or administrative hearing officer.

Maintains valid Driver's License and motor vehicle insurance.

Preferred qualifications include experience or demonstrable knowledge and skill in family law or child support law or previous state policy or program experience in family law, child support law, or related human service program.

Critical Skills/Expertise:
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ohio and Federal law; Ohio Revised and Administrative Codes.
  • Strong understanding of the Ohio Child Support Program practices and processes.
  • Knowledge of government structure at federal, state, and county levels as related to the Child Support program.
  • Ability to efficiently operate computer programs including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills, define and solve problems, apply legal principles, collect data, establish facts, analyze information, and draw valid conclusions using sound judgment, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully in both written and oral form and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to clearly explain complex or nuanced legal matters to non-legal audiences.
  • Proficiency in legal research and drafting with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive inquiries and interactions with members, stakeholders, and partners, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge, adherence and aptitude to follow safety policies, procedures and practices.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team-oriented organization; strong time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and strong organizational skills.
