Job description

Software Engineer

Confidential Medical Robotics Company | Central Ohio | In-person

A medical robotics company is building the foundational software platform behind a next-generation robotic system. This platform supports the company’s robotics, controls, AI, and safety-critical applications.

The Platform Software Engineer II will build, test, and maintain reusable frameworks, utilities, APIs, and core infrastructure used by other engineering teams. This is a strong fit for a hands-on C++ engineer who enjoys greenfield development, broad ownership, and creating software that other developers build upon.

This is a platform-development position—not primarily a robotics-algorithm or machine-learning role. The engineer will collaborate with specialized robotics and AI teams but will not be responsible for developing AI models.

What you’ll do

  • Build foundational C++ frameworks, libraries, utilities, and platform services.
  • Develop interfaces and abstractions used by robotics, controls, AI, and firmware engineers.
  • Help establish patterns for a new software architecture and development environment.
  • Write maintainable, well-documented code that other engineers can use without extensive guidance.
  • Create automated tests that demonstrate requirements and functionality.
  • Translate evolving technical requirements into working software.
  • Collaborate across software, hardware, robotics, AI, quality, and regulatory teams.
  • Participate throughout the product lifecycle, from early development through commercialization.
  • Work in an environment where requirements and technical patterns are still developing.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong C++ programming and software-design skills.
  • Experience building technically complex software, frameworks, libraries, APIs, SDKs, or platform components.
  • Experience creating software that was delivered to and used by other engineering teams.
  • Experience with test-driven development or comprehensive automated testing.
  • Ability to work effectively with incomplete or evolving requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work in person in Central Ohio.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience taking a new product from early development into production or commercial release.
  • Medical-device or other safety-critical product experience.
  • Experience with IEC 62304, FDA design controls, ISO 13485, or a comparable standard.
  • Embedded Linux, real-time operating systems, or hardware-interface experience.
  • QNX experience.
  • Python development experience.
  • Familiarity with sensors, actuators, or robotic computing hardware.
  • ROS2 experience.
  • Startup or small-company experience.

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on C++ engineer who takes ownership beyond simply writing code. They are comfortable testing and documenting their own work, operating without rigid specifications, learning unfamiliar technologies, and supporting the engineers who will ultimately use what they build.
