Job Summary

Remote work is available only for residents of the following states: Florida, Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Kentucky.

The Coder I role involves handling ICD, CPT, HCPCS, and Evaluation and Management coding assignments within a limited specialty setting, which may include clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or professional billing environments.

Job Responsibilities
  • Review health records, utilizing both paper and electronic formats; ensure the presence of appropriate physician orders, medical necessity, and signatures; apply coding guidelines, coding manuals, and software tools to accurately assign codes; assess and edit national and local payment policies.
  • Assign ICD 9 CM diagnoses and ICD 9 CM/CPT procedure codes to all inpatient and outpatient medical records within established timelines, ensuring the integrity of patient information.
  • Accurately code diagnostic and CPT procedure charges for various patient services, including inpatient and outpatient surgical and medical services.
  • Maintain coding and compliance knowledge; keep coding resources up to date; utilize encoder tools to ensure consistency and standardization in coding practices.
  • Input data accurately into patient abstracts or verify the accuracy of existing data.
  • Assess the need for and generate Advance Beneficiary Notices.
  • Complete work promptly after services are rendered and documentation is available; prepare daily lists of delinquent abstracts.
  • Engage in activities that require resolving coding or compliance inquiries with the support of the Director or Coordinator.
  • Assist team members in the revenue cycle with billing or compliance questions across various departments (e.g., clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, patient access, billing, HIM, clinical departments).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired:
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED in General Studies
Preferred:
  • Experience: Over 1 year of coding experience; over 1 year of experience with medical terminology
  • Certification: Certified Professional Coder - Apprentice (CPC-A) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC); Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
Physical Requirements

This position involves sedentary work, requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Most of the time will be spent sitting.
