What you will impact
- Surface integrity: remove scale, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt from steel tanks
- Finish quality: achieve specified profiles and verify conformance to requirements
- Safety and uptime: set, monitor, and maintain blast systems for consistent, safe performance
Key responsibilities
- Clean products to remove grease and dirt before blasting
- Load specified grades of sand, grit, or steel shot into blast hoppers
- Inspect, start, and maintain blast delivery equipment; regulate pressures and media flow
- Direct blast nozzles with precision; use scrapers, brushes, or abrasive papers when required
- Examine finished material to ensure it meets quality specifications
- Report directly to the Shop Supervisor
Physical requirements
- Standing 8+ hours per day
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs
- Pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs
- Walking across varied surfaces (gravel, concrete, asphalt)
- Frequent twisting, bending, and reaching (forward and overhead)
- Ability to wear a respirator for over 4 hours daily
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Prior abrasive blasting or related experience (preferred)
- Knowledge of field concepts, practices, and procedures, or willingness to train on new equipment/processes
- Working knowledge of manual sand/grit blasting machines, materials, and methods
- Familiarity with hand tools (chipping hammer, wire brush) and power tools (grinder, belt sander, palm sander)
- Demonstrated safe work habits
- Visual acuity with 70-degree peripheral perception
