Job description

Duties & Responsibilities:

Operates a school bus in the scheduled transportation of persons at points of embarkation and disembarkation; supervises and responds to riders needs during bus ride; observes riders' behaviors and environmental situation to detect conditions which threaten riders' safety; maintain safety by driving within the laws and regulations of Ohio licensing, state laws, and the Ohio Pupil Transportation operation and safety rules

Operates and rides hydraulic lift and secures riders' wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment; Follows riders' programming procedures when necessary; assists in the boarding and departure of persons at points of embarkation and disembarkation in support of proper boarding procedures; turns in student/client absentee reports at disembarkation point in the morning, maintains attendance sheets as required.

Performs daily vehicle pre-trip and post-trip inspections; reports all defects to garage for repairs; performs duties outlined in the Ohio Pupil Transportation Laws and Regulations,

Participates in annual staff development program requirements and agency required programs to include annual in-services; communicates verbally and in writing to parents and staff, concerns and problems; provides input regarding safe transportation of riders.

Assists with riders during non-route times (e.g., field trips); assumes responsibility for riders' possessions during route times; performs cleaning, disinfecting, and custodial duties as necessary

In the event bus driver duties are not available to be completed, supervisor may assign alternative/additional duties: duties may include but not be limited to delivering lesson plan or other materials to student’s homes; picking up and returning equipment from student homes; assisting in class room settings; assisting on alternative transportation routes at various times of the day; completing cleaning/sanitizing duties on buses, or facilities and in other work areas; taking temperatures and distributing Personal Protective Equipment to guests as they enter a facility; assists other direct service providers serving individuals with developmental disabilities; other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

1. Conduct pre-trip and post trip inspections of your assigned vehicle as required.

2. Use established routes and designated bus stops.

3. Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required.

4. Instruct passenger riders regarding safety.

5. Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.

6. Drive with safety of passengers as first priority by conducting by licensing laws, state laws and Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules.

7. Establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, bus attendants, passenger’s family/guardians, teachers, passengers, principals, and total school or program staff.

8. Bus drivers shall achieve self improvement by attending training sessions, annual in-service and workshops conducted by approved agencies.
