Job description

EMH&T is seeking passionate and talented Civil Engineering students for paid summer 2027 internships in Columbus, Ohio. We’re looking for a motivated and curious student who thrives on solving problems and taking initiative. The ideal candidate is a proactive learner with a strong sense of responsibility, eager to contribute to real-world projects and collaborate with a diverse team. A positive attitude, adaptability, and communication skills are essential, along with a genuine interest in making a meaningful impact through engineering.

EMH&T’s goal for your summer internship is to provide you with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. We look for opportunities to provide resources, feedback and coaching to allow every individual to develop professionally in an environment where you can learn from talented professionals.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Ability to translate academic knowledge into practical engineering assignments with guidance from engineers and project managers.
  • Strong learning agility — ability to learn new engineering concepts, software, standards, and processes quickly.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills — ability to evaluate information, identify issues, and work through potential solutions.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, particularly when preparing calculations, plans, reports, data, or other project documents.
  • Technical aptitude and willingness to develop proficiency with engineering/design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, or similar programs.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, including site development, grading, drainage, utilities, transportation, or other applicable coursework.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and established procedures while asking appropriate questions when clarification is needed.
  • Organization and time management skills with the ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate questions, findings, and progress clearly.
  • Teamwork and collaboration — ability to work effectively with engineers, designers, surveyors, project managers, and other team members.
  • Initiative and curiosity — willingness to seek additional knowledge, take ownership of assignments, and look for opportunities to contribute.
  • Ability to accept and apply feedback to improve the quality and efficiency of future work.
  • Professionalism and dependability, including following through on assignments and commitments.
  • Developing understanding of the project lifecycle and how individual assignments contribute to the overall project.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information from plans, specifications, municipal resources, design standards, and other technical sources.
  • Interest in understanding client needs and the business side of engineering, not simply completing technical tasks.
