Staff Nurse (RN) - Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

University Hospital | 3 Dodd Hall, Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

Scope of Position: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient's involvement in his/her own plan of care and reducing the length of hospitalization. The staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement, the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost-effective care.

Position Summary: The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his/her family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-year college degree in nursing from a CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing with a major in nursing from a CCNE or ACEN accredited nursing program is preferred.
  • Current Ohio license or interim permit required.
  • 2 years of experience in rehabilitation or acute care setting is preferred.

On-going: Maintains current Ohio RN license. Meets mandatory educational and health requirements. Demonstrates computer skills required to meet job functions.

Additional Information:

The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit on the third floor of Dodd Hospital provides comprehensive rehab care for individuals 16+ with brain injury, spinal cord injury, and oncology diagnoses. The unit is supported by an interdisciplinary team and maintains a strong focus on staff and patient safety, clinical excellence, and professional growth. This role offers the opportunity to build advanced rehabilitation expertise while working in a Magnet-recognized, CARF-accredited environment that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and continuous professional development.

Staffing & Care Model

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5, with flexibility to 1:4 for high-acuity rehabilitation patients
  • High-acuity care may include telemetry, continuous pulse oximetry, infectious workups, and care for complex medical needs
  • Emphasis on patient and caregiver education and coordinated, team-based care

Clinical Skills Utilized

  • Tracheostomy management
  • Wound care, including wound VACs and burn dressings
  • Intermittent catheterization and bowel programs
  • Line and port management

  • Robust ergonomic support: ceiling lifts in all patient rooms, floor lifts, transfer devices, shower chairs, stand-assist devices, slide boards, and more

  • CARF-accredited specialty areas: Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, Brain Injury Program, Spinal Cord Injury Program, Stroke Program, and Oncology Program
