What We Look For In a High School Level American History Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of American history from colonial period through contemporary era, including the Revolution, Constitution, westward expansion, Civil War, Reconstruction, industrialization, Progressive Era, World Wars, Cold War, civil rights movement, and modern America. Ability to explain historical causation, primary source analysis, and chronological reasoning while preparing students for Regents exams, AP US History, and college readiness.
  • Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching primary source analysis, essay construction, and chronological thinking for American history. Guides students through interpreting historical documents, evaluating multiple perspectives on events, constructing evidence-based arguments, and understanding cause-and-effect relationships across periods. Emphasizes developing historical thinking skills and connects American history to contemporary political, social, and economic issues.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with high school American history curricula and state standards, and common challenges such as managing extensive chronological content, analyzing primary sources, and writing document-based essays. Adapts instruction using timelines, primary source analysis activities, and structured essay frameworks to support students from general US history through honors and pre-AP levels building historical literacy.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
