Job description

Primary Purpose

Provide structured academic support and college readiness instruction through the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) framework to ensure students increase GPA, enroll in rigorous coursework, and graduate prepared for postsecondary success.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate (any core content preferred)
  • ESL certification (required or must obtain)

Preferred

  • Experience with AVID strategies (WICOR)
  • Experience working with at-promise or first-generation college students
  • Secondary teaching experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. AVID Instruction & Curriculum

  • Teach AVID elective course focused on:
    • Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR)
  • Facilitate:
    • Tutorial process (college-style collaborative problem-solving)
    • Cornell note-taking strategies
    • Time management and organizational systems
  • Deliver lessons aligned with AVID curriculum and district expectations

2. College & Career Readiness

  • Build a strong college-going culture by:
    • Assisting students with college research and applications
    • Supporting FAFSA/TASFA awareness
    • Teaching goal-setting and career exploration
  • Organize and coordinate:
    • College visits
    • Guest speakers
    • Career exploration activities

3. Student Support & Monitoring

  • Monitor student grades, GPA, and academic progress across all content areas
  • Conduct regular student check-ins and goal-setting conferences
  • Collaborate with counselors and teachers to support student success
  • Ensure AVID students are enrolled in rigorous courses (advanced/honors when appropriate)

4. Tutorials & Collaboration

  • Facilitate structured AVID tutorials at least twice weekly
  • Train and support tutors (if applicable)
  • Promote student-led inquiry and accountability during tutorials

5. Campus Leadership & AVID Schoolwide Implementation

  • Serve as an AVID campus advocate by:
    • Modeling AVID strategies in the classroom
    • Supporting campus-wide implementation of WICOR strategies
  • Participate in AVID site team meetings and campus leadership activities

6. Professional Responsibilities

  • Attend required AVID Summer Institute and ongoing training
  • Participate in PLCs and campus professional development
  • Maintain accurate student records and documentation
  • Support campus initiatives and assigned duties

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong understanding of AVID methodologies and WICOR strategies
  • Ability to build relationships with students and motivate at-promise learners
  • Strong organizational and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes

Working Conditions

  • Standard classroom environment
  • Occasional travel for college visits and AVID training
  • After-school responsibilities for tutorials, events, or student support

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) and Sheldon ISD appraisal guidelines.

*Salary is commensurate with experience
*Minimum Salary $67,200 for fully certified teachers
*Works 187-day Contract
* Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
