This position is designed for a 11+ year professional with a strong technical foundation in transportation planning and traffic operations—and a desire to contribute to mentorship and project management for our Virginia strategic initiatives, particularly in the local government market. You’ll work closely with senior leadership, taking on key project responsibilities and supporting a balanced team structure and advancing our long-term business development goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review technical traffic engineering work conducted by others.
  • Perform and manage safety-focused planning efforts.
  • Lead development of technical memoranda, reports, graphics, and presentations that communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support the development of transportation policies and programs for Virginia communities.
  • Lead public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, open houses, small group meetings, and online engagement.
  • Manage tasks, budgets, and schedules for defined components of larger projects; contribute to project management activities.
  • Contribute to proposals, project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Serve as a task or discipline lead on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Manage projects and staff on technical and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support VHB’s Mid-Atlantic strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinker with a strategic, solutions-oriented approach
  • Technically proficient and detail-oriented with strong analytical skills
  • Familiar with Virginia-specific standards (VDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, HCM, HSM)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Proactive attitude and interest in future business development and leadership opportunities

Qualifications

  • 11+ years of experience in transportation planning/engineering (consulting preferred)
  • Professional planning certification or PE required (i.e., American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
  • Experience leading teams and/or projects
