Job description

Role Summary

The Associate Veterinarian provides compassionate in-home veterinary care focused on hospice, palliative care, and humane euthanasia for geriatric and terminally ill pets. This role allows veterinarians to practice meaningful medicine in a calm, supportive environment where the focus is on patient comfort, family guidance, and dignified end-of-life care.

Working primarily in the field, the veterinarian operates independently while collaborating with a supportive medical leadership team and operational staff. This position offers flexibility, professional autonomy, and the opportunity to build strong relationships with pet families and local veterinary clinics while delivering highly compassionate care during emotionally significant moments.

This role is ideal for veterinarians seeking a purpose-driven career with a balanced schedule, thoughtful appointment structure, and a supportive team environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate in-home euthanasia services for geriatric and terminally ill pets

  • Deliver hospice and palliative care focused on patient comfort and quality of life

  • Guide families through end-of-life decision-making with empathy, professionalism, and clear communication

  • Support pet families throughout the euthanasia process with patience, compassion, and emotional sensitivity

  • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation

  • Collaborate with veterinary leadership, support staff, and operational teams

  • Participate in ongoing training, continuing education, and clinical development programs

  • Build relationships with local veterinary clinics and serve as an extension of their care for patients requiring hospice or end-of-life services

  • Provide care aligned with Fear Free principles and patient-centered veterinary practices

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, or BVMS) from an accredited veterinary school

  • Active veterinary license in the state of practice or ability to obtain licensure prior to start

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license

  • Ability to work independently in a field-based environment

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted and up to 100 lbs with assistance

  • Successful completion of background check and motor vehicle record (MVR) review prior to start date

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in hospice, palliative care, or end-of-life veterinary services

  • Fear Free certification or experience with Fear Free principles

  • Strong communication skills when supporting families during emotionally sensitive situations

  • Ability to manage field-based appointments independently

  • Passion for compassionate, relationship-centered veterinary care

  • Interest in long-term career growth within a mission-driven veterinary practice
