Position Summary
At SUN Behavioral Health, our mission is to partner with communities to solve the unmet needs of those living with mental illness and substance use disorders. We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Accounts Receivable Specialist to join our Revenue Cycle team. In this role, you will manage insurance billing, claims follow-up, denial resolution, and account reconciliation for inpatient and outpatient services. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement, insurance contracts, and accounts receivable processes, along with a passion for accuracy and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and submit accurate inpatient and outpatient claims in a timely manner.
- Verify authorizations and ensure services billed align with approved treatment.
- Analyze patient accounts for accuracy and completeness prior to claim submission.
- Follow up on unpaid claims and resolve denials through appeals and payer communication.
- Review insurance payments for contractual compliance and payment accuracy.
- Bill secondary and tertiary insurance carriers as applicable.
- Resolve account discrepancies, credit balances, and reimbursement issues.
- Reconcile patient accounts using payer contract guidelines.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Obtain single-case agreements with non-contracted insurance companies when needed.
- Meet productivity and quality standards while maintaining accuracy.
- Collaborate with Intake, Utilization Review, Medical Records, and other departments.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, payer regulations, and organizational policies.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiencies.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 1-2 years of healthcare billing, accounts receivable, medical collections, or related revenue cycle experience required.
- Knowledge of insurance payer rules, regulations, and reimbursement processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general computer applications.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Understanding of HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field preferred.
- Experience with ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS coding, EOBs, Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and commercial insurance preferred.
- Behavioral health billing experience preferred.
- Experience with HCS systems is a plus.

Education
- Required: High school diploma or GED. Basic medical terminology.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a healthcare or business-related field

Experience
- Required: One to two years previous experience in related field. Knowledge of insurance payor rules and regulations.
- Preferred: Experience with HIPPA regulated environment, processing ICD10 CPT/HCPC's, EOB's, third party payers, Medicare, managed care and private pay. Understanding of behavioral health treatment modalities. Working experience in HCS system a plus
