At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling – to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.

The Hardware Engineering Team provides engineering design & development services to a wide range of products within Raytheon.  The Critical Item Production Readiness (CPR) department is dedicated to ensuring that every product we develop is designed with its entire production lifecycle in mind. By integrating principles of manufacturability, assembly, scalability, and cost management, we aim to achieve production excellence while meeting the highest standards of quality and reliability.

CPR is seeking a Product Development Engineer (PDE) to join our team. The PDE section is responsible for internal design activities, providing expertise that optimizes electronic hardware designs for producibility. The PDE section provides electrical circuit design, strategic procurement relationships, and assembly services through project leadership to achieve cycle time, technology, and cost goals.

As a Product Development Engineer (PDE), you will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in manufacturability for several programs, with a specific focus on the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) product lifecycle. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring the successful production of PCBs and CCAs by influencing critical design decisions during the development cycle. This role directly contributes to the overall affordability, reliability, and efficiency of our manufacturing processes. Utilize your in-depth understanding of PCB or CCA manufacturing processes to guide design teams in making informed decisions regarding bill of material (BOM) component selection, termination finishes, placement, bonding  or coating material selection / application, rework methods, industry best practices, explain IPC specs, and the creation of clear drawing notes are a few examples of tasks within the role.

PDEs lead and facilitate team meetings, track actions and status, and foster efficient communication between design engineers, supply chain teams, 3rd-party suppliers, and program leadership to ensure alignment of goals and expectations.

We act as the liaison between RTX design teams and external PCB/CCA suppliers, bridging gaps between design intent and production realities. Travel to provide onsite supplier support will be expected.  You will work closely with suppliers to address challenges and resolve technical issues. PDEs gather and apply lessons learned from suppliers to drive continuous improvement by incorporating supplier feedback into redesigns.

You will provide guidance and mentorship to other PDEs, especially those without firsthand manufacturing experience, to help them develop their understanding of PCB/CCA production processes and enhance organizational knowledge.

What You Will Do

  • Responsible for hosting and facilitating design reviews and collaborating with a multi-disciplined design team which takes Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) designs from inception to manufacturing.

  • Supplier support includes; travel for onsite support, enable efficient communication between RTX stakeholders and suppliers, disposition supplier requests and manufacturing defects, review supplier data and lessons learned to ensure product excellence and continual improvement, and help standup circuit card assembly testing at a supplier.

  • Mentoring teammates on industry knowledge of circuit card assembly manufacturing and IPC specs.

  • Drive design, procurement and build schedule to meet program need dates.

  • Generate drawing notes and review Technical Data Package (TDP) to ensure adherence to IPC specs.

  • Perform design for manufacturability analyses.

  • BOM (Bill of Material) development and management to ensure optimal CCA manufacturing and rework

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

  • Experience to include at least two of the following:

    • PCB manufacturing

    • Circuit card assembly.

    • Experience with and understanding of IPC and MIL specifications and design guides.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Detailed Circuit Card Assembly process knowledge and the ability to drive the component placement, component selection and material selection and have a positive effect on CCA manufacturability.

  • Experience achieving alignment and collaboration between the various disciplines within the RTX Design community to achieve organizational and programmatic objectives.

  • Experience with project coordination and task management.  Can plan projects, with timely engagement of related functions to ensure effective balance of risk and rigor throughout the development process

  • Previous experience with RTX Circuit card designs
