Student Accounts Coordinator (Accounting Technician III)

Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Student Account Coordinator to manage student housing billing, account administration, and financial reporting. This role supports accurate student account management, collaborates with campus partners, and provides guidance to students and families on housing-related financial matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Process student housing accounts, room assignments, meal plans, contract adjustments, and billing transactions using StarRez, PeopleSoft, and related systems.
• Advise students, parents, and campus partners on housing charges, payment plans, financial aid, and account balances while resolving billing issues and processing account adjustments.
• Prepare financial reports, reconcile account data, manage special billing programs, and support software testing and process improvements.
• Coordinate with campus departments to administer housing-related programs, supervise student assistants, and support specialized billing, collections, and student financial initiatives.
• Process residence hall damage charges, special program billing, and housing-related financial transactions while ensuring accurate documentation and timely collection of funds.

Position Information

• This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
• This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
• The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure, and human resources at San Diego State University.

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and more than 150 student assistants. With an annual operating budget exceeding $159 million, OHA provides housing for over 9,000 students, live-in professional staff, and faculty across 25 residential buildings totaling more than 2 million square feet of residential facilities. OHA also operates SDSU-IV housing at the Imperial Valley campus. OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. In partnership with the Residential Education Office (REO), OHA supports the educational mission of the university while providing the business operations for all housing-related functions, ensuring a high-quality environment that enhances the student educational experience.

Education and Experience

Experience: Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible financial record-keeping experience which has provided the above knowledge and abilities. Education: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Key Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of financial record-keeping, mathematical and general office methods, procedures, and practices; and basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Ability to organize large volumes of detailed transactions, planning for peak loads and maintaining productive work conditions and relationships with others.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with departments across the University to coordinate services, resolve issues, and achieve shared goals.
• Excellent organizational skills and knowledge and experience prioritizing work.
• Patience and a business-like, courteous manner are required in working with students, parents and University departments.
• Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree in a related field preferred.
• Experience with PeopleSoft and StarRez, and working in a University environment with parents and students preferred.

Compensation:

Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department’s budget and equity guidelines.

• Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 1 ($4,570/month).
• Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,570-$6,658 per month (Step 1-Step 20).
• Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
