Job description

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including supervision of accounts payable and senior accounting personnel.

  • Produce accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and review them for completeness and consistency.

  • Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations on a regular basis, researching and correcting any variances.

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by ensuring transactions are properly recorded and classified.

  • Ensure accurate financial tracking and cost distribution across programs funded by Drug Medi-Cal and other contractual sources, in accordance with reporting and reimbursement standards.

  • Maintain adherence to applicable regulatory and compliance requirements, including Medi-Cal guidelines and healthcare privacy and billing regulations.

  • Assist with preparation for external audits and coordinate required financial documentation.

  • Monitor updates to healthcare funding and reimbursement rules and adjust processes as necessary.

  • Complete timely performance evaluations for direct reports in accordance with company policies and established review schedules.

  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations to verify accuracy of recorded activity.

  • Track organizational cash position and maintain short-term cash projections to support operational needs.

  • Oversee accounts payable processes, including invoice review and approval of scheduled payment runs.

  • Maintain fixed asset records, including capitalization, depreciation schedules, and asset disposals in compliance with accounting standards.

  • Contribute to the annual budgeting process and support departmental planning efforts.

  • Provide operational support to the accounting team during periods of high volume or staff absence.

  • Assist finance leadership with ad hoc reporting, financial analysis, and special initiatives.

 
Skills & Qualifications
  • Solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), including standards relevant to healthcare and nonprofit organizations.

  • Experience using accounting systems and advanced spreadsheet functions; familiarity with Great Plains is helpful.

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • Careful attention to detail with a focus on producing accurate work.

  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.

  • Alignment with the organization’s mission and service-oriented culture.

 
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field from an accredited institution required.

  • CPA designation is a plus.


Experience
  • At least five years of progressively responsible accounting experience.

  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience required.

  • Background in healthcare finance or accounting strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with ERP systems; Great Plains experience is advantageous.

  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
