Geotechnical & Materials Technologist
Location: Surrey, BC or Vancouver, BC
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent

About PRI

PRI is one of Canada's fastest-growing full-service consulting firms, driven by our commitment to excellence, innovation, and community. With multidisciplinary teams and offices across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, we deliver integrated solutions in engineering, environmental sciences, planning, and natural resource management.

The Opportunity

PRI is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geotechnical & Materials Technologist to join our Kelowna team. This permanent, full-time position provides an excellent opportunity for a early/intermediate professional to gain hands-on experience in geotechnical investigations, field and laboratory materials testing, and quality assurance practices.

This role offers exposure to both field and laboratory environments, allowing the successful candidate to develop practical skills in geotechnical site assessments, construction materials testing, and laboratory operations under the guidance of senior technologists and engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Field & Laboratory Support

  • Assist in geotechnical site investigations, including drilling, sampling, soil logging, and rock coring.
  • Conduct construction materials testing in the laboratory and field, including soils, aggregate, asphalt, and concrete samples, in accordance with CCIL, ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, OPSS, and MTO standards.
  • Participate in compaction testing, subgrade inspections, and site observations under the supervision of senior staff.
  • Accurately complete field and laboratory reports, worksheets, calculations, and electronic data entry.
  • Operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment safely and correctly, following established procedures.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure reliable, traceable, and standards-compliant results.
  • Assist with equipment calibration, inventory management, and routine laboratory maintenance.
  • Follow all company, project-specific, and regulatory Health & Safety policies and procedures.

Professional Development & Project Support

  • Work closely with technologists and engineers to gain practical knowledge in geotechnical and materials testing practices.
  • Learn and apply industry standards and testing protocols in field and laboratory environments.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to project planning, coordination, and reporting.
  • Take on progressively responsible assignments as skills and confidence develop.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geotechnical Technologist designation is an asset.
  • Strong interest in geotechnical engineering, construction materials, and quality assurance/testing practices.
  • Familiarity with laboratory and field testing standards (CCIL, ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, OPSS, MTO) is an asset.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field or laboratory settings and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, quality, and professional growth.
