Job description

The Route Manager is responsible for exercising discretion and independent judgment to manage daily operations of the facility, including but not limited to personnel, production, safety, and customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED, some college preferred
  • Previous operations experience in the Trash industry
  • 3 or more years of prior management of people in a fast-paced environment
  • Valid CDL license with attached DOT Medical Card, preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • The ability to convey complex directions to employees
  • Language skills include the ability to analyze and communicate effectively, including but not limited to the ability to compose concise procedures, memos, and letters
  • Ability to speak and listen professionally, and to work with various people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent computer skills necessary; Microsoft Excel and Word proficiency required.
  • Use of computer-aided dispatching equipment required.
  • Advanced scheduling and dispatch experience required.
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to draft and carry out detailed instructions. Ability to identify and deal with problems involving a variety of variables in random situations, including problem-solving.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

The requirements listed below constitute the minimum tasks necessary to perform this position and are considered essential job duties. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Drivers:

  • Exercises discretion in assigning and supervising CDL drivers operating solid waste collection equipment.
  • Monitors daily production.
  • Ensures all drivers perform and complete daily activities with routes professionally and timely.
  • Reviews safety protocols, such as missing logs/DMRs.
  • Reviews and verifies Hours of Service for all drivers to ensure compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Manages random drug screens and monitors for reasonable suspicion.

Operations:

  • Exercises independent judgment in the monitoring progress of daily operations and reassigns team members to accommodate business needs.
  • Conducts field inspections and audits of all site personnel to ensure proper work procedures are compliant with Company and all applicable legal requirements.
  • Uses discretion to address customer complaints in a timely manner and reviews with General Manager.
  • Partners with the Marketing Manager and General Manager with residential contracts to ensure smooth contract start-ups.
  • Partners with City Service Directors monthly to check service status.
  • Supervises dispatch team and/or dispatches drivers as needed.

Safety:

  • Develops and executes safety goals.
  • Oversees compliance programs, including but not limited to environmental, DOT, and OSHA.
  • Performs audits to ensure compliance with Company, DOT, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Promotes and participates in Company Safety Programs with all team members.
  • Oversees accident investigations are being completed.
  • Monitors pre- and post-trip route observations are completed weekly and monthly.
  • Oversees Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
  • Attends monthly safety meetings.

Routing:

  • Exercises independent judgment in optimizing daily refuse and recycling routes by working with the Routing Department, Route Supervisors, and Drivers to ensure effective and efficient routing of all routes.
  • Uses discretion to adjust daily activities due to unforeseen incidents such as weather and/or personnel changes.

Profitability:

  • Develops short and long-term goals and action plans for the site and Company.
  • Controls costs by monitoring driver productivity and operational efficiencies.
  • Partners with General Manager to develop yearly budget.

Personnel:

  • Supervise operations employees directly and indirectly, with the assistance of the Operations Supervisor.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper staffing, which includes assisting with new hires and terminations of existing employees.
  • Supervise employees to review and approve hours worked and vacation requests.
  • Review evaluations with employees and recommend employees for promotions.
  • Independently exercise discretion to issue discipline, suspensions, and terminations of subordinate employees.
  • Make independent hiring decisions, including conducting interviews of applicants and reviewing resumes.
  • Independently exercise discretion in issuing rewards to subordinates for superior work performance, consisting of gift cards, recognition and promotion recommendations.
  • Exercises independent judgment in transferring employees to different shifts and departments.
  • Prepare performance appraisals of subordinates and make recommendations for bonuses and raises.
  • Exercise discretion in assigning and transferring staff to various shifts and job assignments.
  • Exercises discretion in recalling, rehiring and laying off employees.

Maintenance:

  • Supplies Maintenance Manager with Daily Route Matrix to ensure proper equipment needs are met daily.
  • Reviews schedule of routine repairs with Maintenance Manager.
  • Reviews DMRs with Maintenance Manager to ensure completion in a timely manner.
  • Partners with Maintenance Manager to review all DMRs and completed repairs to ensure completion, correctly, and efficiently.
  • Administers and monitors audit program for the weekly inspections of fleet.

Training:

  • Partners with General Manager to develop training programs for team.
  • Coaches, develops, and educates Supervisors.
  • Ensures training programs are administered to new and existing team members to reduce turnover, maintenance costs, and to help reduce accidents.
