Job description

Interstate Waste Services is the most progressive and innovative provider of solid waste and recycling services in the country! We primarily service Northern New Jersey, Southern New York State, New York City, with a landfill located in Ohio, where we also own and operate a state-of-the-art rail-served landfill. We cater to a diverse range of residential, industrial and commercial customers. Our mission has always been to provide our customers with the highest quality waste, recycling and environmental services, while keeping focus on employee, customer and environmental safety. 

What makes our company culture unique is we have mastered the ability to balance the standards of a large corporate company while maintaining our small business family style culture. 


The Sorters main responsibility is to sort and pick through refuse at our MRF / Optical Sorting Facility (Materials Recovery Facility). They play an integral role in the elimination of wrongly recycled products into the environment’s waste and recycling stream. They will learn the appropriate products to identify throughout the optical sorting machinery.


  • Must be able to stand for four hours at a time (based on shift and break rotations)
  • Must be able to work in hot and cold weather (work area is not heated or cooled—it reflects the outdoor temperature at the time)
  • Sort through recyclables on a moving conveyor belt
  • Sweeping is required at cleanup time
  • Light shoveling
  • Occasional lifting (less than 50lbs)
  • Familiarity with the use of hand tools like pliers for the cleaning of baled product

*Sorters will spend their shift standing on their feet alongside the conveyer belts

They will be exposed to odors, hot or cold weather, as well as physically touching items in the recycling stream


  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds
  • Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred.
  • Able to work in an outdoor environment on a constant basis while being exposed to variable weather conditions, temperatures, chemicals, dust, fumes, smells, and loud noises.
