Description Glendale Community College is currently hiring an Instructional Support Operator to provide technical support for immersive technologies, including Dreamscape Learn, 3D printing, and related technologies. Definition Under direction, performs technical instructional support in a Virtual Reality (VR) laboratory, makerspace, or similar immersive and hands-on learning environment; reinforces instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, and techniques presented by the instructor; assists instructors and students in the use of laboratory equipment and technologies; prepares and maintains lab and makerspace environments and equipment; and performs other related duties as assigned. Supervision Works under the direct supervision of the respective Dean.
May receive work direction from, but is not directly or indirectly supervised by, an instructor or division/department chair. Does not directly or indirectly supervise other employees but may provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers. Work Schedule 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday: 9:00am-5:30pm.
Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and responsibilities are typical of those performed in this classification. Performs technical instructional support duties in a Virtual Reality (VR) laboratory, makerspace, learning center, or similar immersive, hands-on instructional setting by assisting students with academic work using established procedures and protocols; supports instructional and outreach activities including workshops, demonstrations, presentations, and hosting visitors related to the lab environment. Reinforces instruction, terminology, concepts, principles, and techniques presented by the instructor and in line with industry practice; explains assignments and guides students in the use of VR systems, simulation software, digital design platforms, fabrication equipment, electronics workstations, and related technologies to complete course activities; maintains currency in VR and makerspace education, emphasizing hands-on, student-centered learning.
Assists instructors and students in the use of laboratory equipment and technologies, including VR systems, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, hand and power tools, workstations, software applications, and related facilities; schedules lab and equipment usage, and manages the check-in and check-out of equipment and supplies. Prepares and maintains VR lab and makerspace environments, including setup of equipment, materials, and learning spaces for demonstrations, scheduled exercises, and classroom assignments; demonstrates safe and proper use of equipment and ensures all items are cleaned, maintained, and stored appropriately after use; monitors inventory and submits requests for supplies and equipment, and collaborates with Facilities on installation and maintenance needs. Provides technical support for software and systems used in instructional settings, including learning management systems, student accounts, communication platforms, and standard business applications (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email, and internet tools); assists with configuration and basic support of specialized instructional software as needed.
Performs routine troubleshooting of hardware and software issues, and coordinates with IT staff for installations, updates, repairs, and more complex technical problems. Tracks student participation and attendance and informs instructors of noted issues or problems. Maintains accurate and organized electronic and hard copy records and files pertaining to student participation, performance, and progress in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
May assist with compiling and reporting data; may recommend changes to laboratory policies and procedures. May provide work direction to lower-level employees, temporary employees, and/or student workers. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The education, training, and experience qualifications are considered likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the above essential duties. Education and Experience Associate's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. Two (2) years of experience supporting instruction, laboratory operations, or technical environments involving VR, immersive technologies, makerspace, fabrication, or similar hands-on learning environments.
Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements Depending on the assignment, experience and or college-level course work related to the assigned department or program may be required. Knowledge of: VR systems, immersive technologies, and/or makerspace equipment, including setup, operation, and troubleshooting. Technologies, equipment, materials, and supplies applicable to the subject.
General laboratory/classroom procedures and rules of conduct including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment. Laws, regulations, standards, and requirements applicable to areas of assignment. Technical methods of data research, collection, compilation, organization, and reporting.
Methods of prioritizing, planning, and organizing work. Standard formats for business correspondence and other communications. Standard office practices or procedures.
Standard office software and modern office equipment. Methods of filing information using alpha, numeric and alphanumeric systems. Correct use of the English language, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and composition.
Principles and practices of customer service. Business arithmetic. Ability to: Explain and apply general laboratory/classroom procedures including safety procedures applicable to the areas of assignment.
Assist students with instructional terminology, concepts, principles, and techniques. Set up and demonstrate the proper utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies. Monitor student progress.
Maintain supplies and facility. Understand, apply, and explain laws, regulations, policies, and other requirements applicable to the areas of assignment. Research, collect, organize, and report data.
Operate a variety of office equipment including computers and printers/copiers. Utilize standard office software (e.g., email, word processing, and spreadsheet software). Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
Prepare reports, correspondence, and other documents using multiple business formats. Maintain hard copy and electronic files and records. Perform business arithmetic.
Prioritize work and complete assignments accurately and within established deadlines. Provide and obtain detailed information to/from others. Provide customer service with a high level of sensitivity, tact and patience.
Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties. Perform and prioritize multiple tasks. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work. Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others, including staff, faculty, students, and the public; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work is typically performed in an instructional laboratory, computer laboratory, or similar student learning setting. Additional Information Additional Information Salary The Instructional Support Operator classification's current salary range is R-33.
Starting salary is from Step 1: $5289.35 to Step 3: $5831.51 per month depending upon education and experience. Salary range: Step 1: $5289.35 to Step 6: $6750.70 per month (plus longevity where applicable) Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
