Job description

The Air Force Civilian Service (AFCS) is looking for a full-time Hazardous Material Reduction (HMR) Subject Matter Expert (NH-0819/1301-03) to work at Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC). This federal job offers a rewarding and exciting career with benefits.

2026 Salary Range is $89,508-$138,370 yearly (includes locality).

In this position, you will serve as the Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC) Hazardous Materials Reduction (HMR) Subject Matter Expert, acting as the technical authority and designated representative for the AFSC Director of Engineering (AFSC/EN). This position is responsible for providing strategic direction, programmatic oversight, and technical expertise to lead AFSC's enterprise-wide efforts in reducing or eliminating hazardous materials across weapon system sustainment, depot maintenance operations, and industrial facilities. The purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with all federal and local regulations, minimize environmental impact, protect personnel health, and drive the integration of safer, alternative materials and processes throughout the Air Logistics Complexes (ALCs).
Primary duties involve HMR activities associated predominately with Hexavalent Chromium reduction efforts, as well as Industrial Process Control (IPC) responsibilities. Incumbent must be capable of leading medium-sized teams, be a self-starter, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to manage tasks and deadlines, capable of planning projects and meeting key milestones, adept at analyzing and manipulating complex data sets, and willing to engage and brief senior leaders.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of professional environmental physical science principles, practices, techniques, and procedures to effectively perform project development, execution, training, and advisory services in assigned program element; and practical applications of available environmental analysis, and application of the analysis in developing policy and implementing the required processes or conversions.
2. Knowledge of physical science and related disciplines to design, develop and adapt scientific methods and techniques to recommend solutions for scientific and engineering problems.
3. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, and other guidance to make decisions and recommendations concerning assigned restoration, compliance, conservation, pollution prevention, and/or integration principles and practices; and health, safety, and security practices.
4. Knowledge of extensive environmental physical science pertaining to the use, handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and toxic waste in an industrial or developmental environment.
5. Skill to integrate a team of professionals to include environmental specialists and other government officials to effectively address specific issues related to program execution.
6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
REQUIREMENTS:
- U.S. Citizenship
- Minimum of 3 years in Science & Engineering (S&E)
- Employee must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance as a condition of employment
- Could be subject to random testing for drug use
- Periodic travel for temporary duty (TDY) may be needed to support workload
- Designated as an acquisition position covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP)
