What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical theory, circuit design, and problem-solving, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, and PLC programming, as well as certifications like the Professional Engineer (PE) license, are highly valuable. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail help you collaborate effectively and ensure accuracy in complex projects. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable systems, meeting project requirements, and ensuring safety and efficiency in electrical engineering roles.

What are some common challenges electrical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Electrical engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and civil engineers on large projects. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication, as each discipline may use different terminology and design approaches. Electrical engineers must also coordinate timelines for component integration and resolve any conflicts in technical specifications. Developing flexibility and strong teamwork skills helps electrical engineers navigate these challenges and contribute effectively to successful project outcomes.

What are electrical jobs?

Electrical jobs refer to positions that involve working with electrical systems, components, and devices. These jobs can include roles such as electricians, electrical engineers, and technicians who install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Electrical professionals are responsible for ensuring that electrical systems operate safely and efficiently, following building codes and safety regulations. The field offers various specializations, including power systems, control systems, and electronics.

What is the difference between Electrical vs Electrician?

AspectElectricalElectrician
CredentialsTypically requires technical training or certification in electrical systemsRequires licensing or certification to perform electrical work
Work EnvironmentDesign, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems in various settingsHands-on installation, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical systems
Industry UsageUsed broadly in engineering, construction, and manufacturing sectorsPrimarily in construction, maintenance, and residential/commercial electrical work

Electrical refers to the field or profession involving electrical systems, often encompassing design and planning. Electrician is a specific trade role focused on installing and repairing electrical wiring and systems. While both work with electricity, Electrical is broader, and Electrician is more hands-on and certification-dependent.

Job description

Summary:

Electrical Engineers and Electrical Designers are responsible for the design, coordination, documentation, and delivery of electrical building systems for an “Anonymous Client” Sector. Think Remodels and New Builds for many of their storefront and distribution locations. Depending on experience level, individuals may perform engineering calculations, prepare and review design documents, coordinate with project teams, manage tasks or projects, provide technical leadership, mentor others, and support business development activities. All team members are expected to uphold a client-centric mindset, demonstrate quality and integrity, and contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and continuously learning environment.

Today’s buildings are rapidly evolving. Electrical system design is no longer as simple as lighting and power design overlaid onto an architectural background.  Our engineers understand that the electrical system forms the foundation that makes the building come to life.  It’s a responsibility that we take very seriously.   We balance the rigorous requirements of life safety and code compliance with practicality and aesthetic considerations to deliver a design that supports life of the building and delivers on our client’s vision for the project.

Henderson’s Electrical Services:

  • Power Systems Design & Distribution
  • Medium Voltage Design
  • Emergency & Standby Power Generation
  • Lighting Systems & Controls Design
  • Lightning Protection
  • Grounding Design
  • Fault Current & Overcurrent Coordination Studies
  • Arc Flash Studies
  • Emergency Egress Illumination
  • Solar & Wind Power Design

Position Summary:

Responsible for guiding complex electrical engineering efforts. This role provides advanced technical expertise, leads discipline teams, oversees project quality, mentors designers and engineers, resolves major design and construction challenges, and contributes to practice-level strategy, operations, and business development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead electrical engineering design from concept through completion for complex or large-scale projects.
  • Direct or oversee the preparation of design documents, system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Develop solutions to advanced and highly complex engineering problems, providing discipline-wide technical guidance.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach across teams and practices, including supervising less experienced designers and engineers.
  • Participate in or lead staffing recommendations, training initiatives, and technical strategy development.
  • Provide quality oversight, including conducting and/or issuing final quality reviews to ensure compliance with standards and best practices.
  • Communicate with clients, resolve conflicts, and provide leadership in responding to technical questions or design challenges.
  • Lead or support strategic business development efforts and maintain key client and partner relationships.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record when assigned, ensuring technical accuracy, accountability, and adherence to professional standards.

Core Competencies:

  • Leadership & Influence: Inspires organizational culture, models integrity, and navigates ambiguity while motivating others.
  • Coaching & Development: Mentors talent across the discipline, fosters continuous learning, and cultivates constructive feedback loops.
  • Quality & Accountability: Drives high-quality outcomes, holds others accountable, and reinforces standards across the discipline.
  • Collaboration & Inclusion: Resolves conflict with diplomacy, promotes inclusive teamwork, and contributes to a collaborative environment.
  • Innovation & Professional Responsibility: Encourages innovation, maintains financial and technical responsibility, and stays current with industry advancements.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field (electrical, mechanical, fire protection, or architectural)
  • 12+ years of relevant experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred, required for EOR’s.
  • Additional technical certifications (e.g., RCDD, NICET, CPD, LEED, WELL) highly preferred.
  • Advanced to expert proficiency in electrical engineering design, applicable codes and standards, Revit, Bluebeam, and construction processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead discipline coordination and manage complex or large-scale project scopes.
  • MEP/Construction Industry experience
  • High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand and utilize various systems and processes.
  • Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and engineering design software applicable to your discipline or focus.
  • Clear communication and willingness to ask questions.
  • Accountability, reliability, and ethical behavior.
  • Commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Collaboration and receptiveness to feedback.
