Job description

We are seeking a dynamic, hands-on Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to serve as a true change agent within our elevator manufacturing facility. This individual will play a critical role in building, shaping, and maturing a comprehensive EHS program from the ground up.

The ideal candidate leads through education, authentic engagement, and practical problem-solving-earning trust across all levels of the organization. You will help create a culture where employees not only understand safety but take ownership of their own well-being and that of their coworkers.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Implementation

  • Conduct a comprehensive baseline assessment of current safety practices; identify gaps and develop a prioritized roadmap of quick wins and long-term improvements.
  • Design and implement a structured EHS management system tailored to elevator manufacturing, including written programs, SOPs, and hazard control strategies.
  • Develop and roll out safety programs covering critical risk areas such as:
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • Electrical Safety
    • Fall Protection
    • Hoisting & Rigging
    • Confined Space
    • Forklift/Material Handling
    • Ergonomics

Environmental Compliance

  • Establish and manage environmental compliance programs, including:
    • Waste management
    • Chemical handling and SDS management
    • Air and water permitting (as applicable)

Training & Culture Building

  • Create and deliver engaging, multi-tiered safety training for all employee levels-from shop floor technicians to leadership.
  • Champion a culture of safety built on participation, trust, and shared ownership-not fear or enforcement alone.
  • Maintain a strong, visible presence on the shop floor to build relationships and reinforce safety as a core value.
  • Train and empower supervisors and lead technicians to take ownership of daily safety responsibilities.
  • Facilitate safety committees, toolbox talks, and participatory engagement initiatives.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and other applicable regulations.
  • Serve as the primary contact for OSHA, insurance carriers, and workers' compensation matters.
  • Oversee OSHA 300/301/300A logs and ensure accurate, timely reporting.
  • Partner with HR on workers' compensation, return-to-work programs, and ADA accommodations.

Incident Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead thorough, root-cause investigations of incidents, near-misses, and property damage events.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Track and analyze leading and lagging safety indicators to drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify and share best practices across departments and locations; celebrate safety achievements.

Leadership

  • Serve as Emergency Response Site Lead.
  • Act as a key member of the Plant Leadership Team.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in Environmental, Health & Safety practices
  • Excellent teaching and training abilities
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 standards
  • Proven success building safety programs and driving cultural change
  • Experience with root cause analysis methodologies (5-Why, Fishbone, SCAT, etc.)
  • CPR / First Aid certification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Core Competencies & Abilities

  • Functional/Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of EPA, DOT, and OSHA regulations
  • Decision Quality: Proven track record of reducing workplace injuries while maintaining compliance
  • Time Management: Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Action-Oriented: Proactive in identifying risks and implementing preventative solutions
  • Change Leadership: Leads by example and effectively communicates across all levels

Knowledge Requirements

Required:

  • Knowledge of RCRA, DOT, OSHA regulations
  • Industrial hygiene and safety testing practices

Preferred:

  • HAZWOPER Certification
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certification
  • OSHA 501 certification (strongly preferred)
  • Experience in elevator manufacturing or similar mechanical industries
  • Familiarity with ANSI/ASME A17.1 Elevator Safety Code
  • ASP or CSP certification (or in progress)
  • Environmental compliance experience (hazardous waste, Tier II reporting, air permits, etc.)

Why Join Us?

We offer a competitive compensation package based on experience, along with:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
    • 100% employer-paid for employees
    • 50% employer-paid for dependents
  • 401(k) retirement plan
