Job description

The Rockland County Office of the County Attorney is seeking a candidate to perform transactional legal work of a routine moderate to complex nature representing the County of Rockland. The candidate will be responsible for legal work involving independent responsibility for a wide variety of legal issues; e.g., legal research and writing, preparing correspondence, contracts, agreements, deeds, affidavits, resolutions, land acquisition documents, bid reviews, and notices; performing legal research, drafting legal documents; and reviewing documents for completeness, legal sufficiency and accuracy.

This position reports directly to the Chief Assistant County Attorney.

Job Description

Duties include: providing legal advice to the Office of the County Executive, County Legislature, elected officials, commissioners, agency heads and employees on a variety of matters; providing day-to-day guidance to legal, paralegal and clerical staff, when assigned; attending public hearings, boards, commission meetings, and meetings with County, public and elected officials; participating in meetings and conferences; working with legal staff in the handling of their assigned cases; preparing case status and statistical reports, as required; conducting training for attorneys, paralegal staff and other County personnel on pertinent areas of law, newly enacted regulations, recently decided cases. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a license to practice law in New York State; and
  2. Provision of a current certificate of good standing;
  3. License to practice law in the State of New York must be maintained throughout the course of employment in this title;
  4. As a public officer one must meet all current requirements of Section 3 of the Public Officers Law, including, but not limited to United States citizenship and applicable residency requirements.

  • Work Location: New City, NY
  • Experience with budget and finance, accounting and/or real estate matters is a plus.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary and benefits are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:

  • Approximate annual starting salary in 2026 (RAM Grade 6, Step 99) $108,247; upon successful probationary period and continued employment annual increases as authorized by the Rockland Association of Management collective bargaining agreement with the County of Rockland:
  • 2027 (RAM Grade 6, Step 1 - $116,290)
  • 2028 (RAM Grade 6, Step 2 - $124,943)
  • 40 hour work week (8 hours per day, Monday through Friday 9am – 5pm)
  • Paid time off including: vacation, personal, holiday, sick, cancer screening, bereavement,
  • Benefits include Medical, Dental and Vision
  • Other Benefits include deferred compensation retirement saving and health savings account programs, flex spending, AFLAC, and the NY 529 College Savings program
  • This position is New York State Pension eligible
