Who We Want
The AML Officer is responsible for leading the overall design, implementation, oversight, and enforcement of the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Program. This role ensures compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, and applicable FinCEN and OFAC requirements. The position provides leadership over a robust risk-based framework to detect and prevent non-compliant behaviors, money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illicit activities while supporting a strong culture of compliance and ethics.
What To Expect
Program Oversight & Governance
  • Oversee the firm's AML programs in alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Build and lead a team of analysts ensuring the consistent daily execution of internal procedures.
  • Report on compliance risks, AML issues, and program effectiveness to senior management.
  • Ensure policies and procedures for both are reviewed and updated at least annually.

Risk Assessment & Framework Management
  • Design, implement, and maintain risk assessment frameworks.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor risks across customers, products, geographies, delivery channels, sales trends, and trading/advisory behaviors.
  • Ensure appropriate controls are in place and residual risks are effectively managed.

Investigations
  • Oversee transaction monitoring systems to detect suspicious activity based on red flags and risk indicators.
  • Conduct investigations into unusual, outlier, or suspicious activity; document findings; and use results to evolve systems and recommend protocol updates.
  • Direct timely escalation and resolution of potential compliance or AML concerns.

Regulatory Reporting & Escalation
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with FinCEN and compliance with other BSA reporting obligations.
  • Escalate reasonable suspicions or significant risks to the Chief Compliance Officer, senior management, or the Board as appropriate.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of SARs and related investigations.
  • Oversee screening against OFAC and other sanctions/watchlists during onboarding and ongoing monitoring.
  • Direct appropriate actions, including blocking or rejecting transactions when required.

Regulatory Coordination & Liaison
  • Serve as an internal expert resource and maintain open, cooperative relationships with regulators.
  • Act as a liaison for internal audits, regulatory inquiries, external examinations, and FinCEN 314(a)/(b) requests.
  • Support information sharing and act as a primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and law enforcement on compliance and AML matters.

Training, Recordkeeping & Program Improvement
  • Develop and deliver training programs on AML risks, red flags, and reporting obligations.
  • Ensure all records are maintained in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate independent testing of the AML program, address findings, implement corrective actions, and continuously enhance program effectiveness.
  • Assist the broader compliance team with projects and initiatives to strengthen the overall compliance program.

Leadership & Culture
  • Provide guidance to business units and compliance staff on regulatory and AML-related matters.
  • Promote a strong culture of compliance, ethics, and integrity across the organization.

What You Need
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. financial regulations, including SEC and state securities rules, BSA, USA PATRIOT Act, FinCEN, and OFAC requirements.
  • Deep understanding of compliance laws, rules, risks, and sanctions screening.
  • Ability to apply a risk-based approach to identify and mitigate financial crime risks.
  • Experience interpreting regulatory requirements and translating them into practical controls and procedures.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and investigative skills with strong attention to detail and technical aptitude.
  • Proven ability to assess complex transactions, sales practice trends, and patterns indicative of non-compliance or suspicious activity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present findings and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with AML monitoring tools, case management platforms, and MS Office applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and work independently as a self-starter while functioning as a collaborative team player.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in the financial services industry, with significant exposure to compliance, operations/controls, and AML/financial crime compliance.
  • Prior experience building and leading teams.
  • Professional certifications preferred (e.g., CAMS - Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist).
  • Experience with regulatory examinations and internal audits.

The total rewards expected for this role include:
  • Starting annual base salary between $150,000 - 160,000.
  • Variable compensation potential (Bonus and/or commissions)
