The President, Henry Ford Hospital provides overall strategic, operational, and executive leadership within a defined geographic region of the system. As an academic, education, and research center of excellence, Henry Ford Hospital is highly matrixed in structure and has a unique position as a closed-model hospital for physician services and serves as the home of the Henry Ford Medical Group. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, Chief Executive Officer of Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford Medical Group, this role is accountable for anticipating industry trends and directing all internal hospital and campus operations to optimally fulfill the Henry Ford Health strategy.
The President, Henry Ford Hospital manages short-term tactics alongside long-term strategic plans to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective, and market-focused healthcare. This leader functions within a matrixed environment; collaborating with system executives, medical staff, board members, and community stakeholders to advance the healthcare system’s mission, vision, and values, while driving growth, profitability, clinical excellence, and local market engagement. Additionally, the President serves as a statewide and national ambassador for specialty healthcare referrals provided at Henry Ford Hospital.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Market Growth

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement regional strategies aligned with overall Henry Ford Health goals. Formulate the hospital and campus operational vision, evaluating continuing effectiveness within the system framework.
  • Market Share & Business Development: Continually assess market opportunities and challenges to expand market share. Lead the identification, evaluation, and execution of local market growth strategies, service offerings, and collaborative opportunities.
  • Advisory & Fiduciary Board Engagement: Serve as the liaison to the local Advisory Board and ensure the Board of Trustees is fully informed, supported, and guided on relevant trends, strategic planning, and Affiliation Agreement matters.

Operational Excellence & Continuum of Care

  • Operational Execution: Bring a disciplined approach to key performance metrics, leveraging evidence-based methods (e.g., rounding for outcomes, huddles, visual management) to optimize resource utilization across staffing, technology, and facilities.
  • Care Continuum & Patient Flow: Oversee the alignment and integration of patient flow, case management, social services, and utilization review across all care settings (inpatient, emergency, ambulatory, sub-acute, home care, and physician networks).
  • Transfer & Referral Systems: Direct processes and relationships for patient transfers from internal and external healthcare entities, optimizing length of stay (LOS) and cost per case while maintaining quality outcomes.

Financial Performance & Administrative Management

  • P&L & Budgetary Ownership: Own the regional P&L and collaborate with financial leadership to manage the regional budget, optimizing financial performance, operating margins, capital requirements, and cost-control strategies.
  • Revenue Cycle & System Integration: Partner with revenue cycle leadership to streamline billing and access, and collaborate with system-level IT, supply chain, and operational functions.

Consumer & Patient Experience

  • Seamless Care Journey: Set expectations for a welcoming, seamless patient journey across all care settings.
  • Feedback & Innovation: Utilize CAHPS/NPS data, digital tools, and market insights to mitigate issues, address administrative burdens for clinicians, and adapt to consumer preferences.

Talent Management & Organizational Culture

  • Executive Leadership & Mentorship: Lead, mentor, and evaluate facility and operational leaders, fostering a high-performing leadership team.
  • Recruitment & Retention: Build a differentiated work environment that attracts, retains, and engages top-tier team members, clinicians, and physicians. Hold crucial conversations when addressing chronic underperformance.
  • Culture of Belonging: Foster an equitable culture aligned with Henry Ford Health values, prioritizing employee wellbeing, recognition, and competitive compensation.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Community Presence: Represent the hospital and campus in community forums and civic events, establishing a presence as a trusted local leader and promoting the impact of Henry Ford Health services.
  • Physician & Stakeholder Relations: Build sustainable relationships with physicians, team members, patients, and external partners based on trust, shared values, and mutuality.

Regulatory Compliance, Quality & Safety

  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all facilities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, system compliance programs, and standards of conduct.
  • Quality & Accreditation: Maintain safety standards, high reliability, and accreditation alignment with the Quadruple Aim. Monitor medical performance in close coordination with the Medical Staff.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA), Health Administration (MHA), M.D., or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible executive-level leadership experience (physician or non-physician) within a complex healthcare system or hospital environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare business operations, innovative patient care models, clinical quality drivers, and market trend analysis.
  • Exceptional strategic planning, financial acumen, relationship building, change management, and communication skills across diverse audiences.
